    Victory or Death

    Just thought everyone would appreciate a little reminder that March 6th is the day that the Alamo fell. Today we remember the Alamo and the men who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. Pretty big medicine…

    A Line in the Sand
    The origin of the phrase is most commonly associated with Texas history surrounding the Battle of the Alamo, as it is attributed to Colonel William Travis, commander of the Alamo defense forces. In the waning days of the Battle (somewhere between March 3–5, 1836), with Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna having the Alamo completely surrounded, Santa Anna sent a messenger to Travis demanding surrender, or else everyone in the compound would be killed. According to the legend, Travis called the Alamo defenders together, explained that defeat was almost certain, and read the letter of surrender; Travis then (having chosen to die instead of surrender) reportedly pulled his battle sword, used it to draw a line in the ground of the Alamo, and asked for volunteers to cross over the line and join him, understanding their decision would be irreversible. The legend states that all but one of the defenders (including Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett) joined Travis on his side of the line; Moses Rose being the only defender choosing to leave the compound. Travis then responded to Santa Anna's letter with cannon fire, whereupon Santa Anna replied by playing El Degüello.

              Let's also remember San Jacinto Day which is coming up!

                And nobody mentioned March 2nd on this board. I figured nobody was interested in history.

                The line in the sand is in all probability a Hollywood fabrication, but it does make a great, though tragic story, even better. This is why the newest and most historically accurate Alamo movie does not have Travis drawing a line in the sand. One of the few examples in history of how losing a battle actually helped win a war.

                If you get the chance to go to San Antonio to see Travis' letter, DO IT!

                  I heard today on the radio that 56% of Americans surveyed thought that we won the Battle of the Alamo. Just goes the show the direction our country is taking.

                          As of the 6th, my son is 15 days old. His name is Barrett. (I picked the name, my wife picked the spelling) Does this suffice for "teaching my kids well?" My wife is a teacher in HISD. I find is appalling that the parents do little to help educate their children. I love history. My kids will know it well, lest they be doomed to repeat it.


                          -For those that don't know, the "B" in William B. Travis is for Barret. It is not a coincidence my son shares the name.

                              Not Texas Independence, but I was maybe 11 before I realized the South didn't actually win the Civil War! I still have issues with it today!
