  • Glowing water in the bay????

Hey I forgot to mention that when I went gigging last Friday night in Matagorda the water was glowing!! It was pretty windy so it was whitecapping running accros the bay and every whitecap was glowing a light green color. The same color as a glow in the dark sticker. Even our propwash was that same color. It was awesome!!

When we got to the shoreline there was mullet everywhere and when we would get close to them they would haul as$ away leaving a glowing trail of water behind them. It was really cool seeing all of this out there in the pitch black with no moon, but what the heck was it? Anyone know what causes the bay water to do this?

lol...that's the bioluminescence or something like that. It looks real cool at night during a midnight wade. It spooked the crap out of me the first time I saw it though. My legs would light up when I walked. Mullet would put off a glow.

Hehe, yep, it's bioluminescence. Same biochemical reaction that fireflies use, but in plankton.

I've seen it in Galveston several times.

Pretty often, I'll see glowing jelly fish. They flash, and if you hit them with something they flash a lot. It's cool to see your anchor line lit up with 'em. You can aso see them flashing up in the grass at high tide.

Once or twice, I've seen plankton that glow. This is a lot cooler, because there are so many of them. Each paddle stroke I took, you could see the water swirls illuminated. The yak was also leaving a glowing wake. This was in the middle of the winter too.

I've scuba dived with it in the carribean before on a night dive. You could turn off your light, and swing your arms around and all the water movement would be lit up. Trippy stuff!

Ain't it nice living on the coast where we can see cool **** like this on a daily basis? City folk don't know what they're missing.

Hmm, phosphorus is an element. Phosphorescence is the term for energy emission that is slow (like how glow in the dark things glow for a while after being "charged"), versus flouresence, which is instant.

That phenome creeped me out real good one night in the surf. The water was super clear and every step lighted up the area around me in about a 3 ft diamiter as I was walking out shark baits to the second sand bar to make a cast. At night I am not so sure you actualy want to see whats swimming around you and I keep thinking one of my light-it steps would reaveal a large Bull Shark or worse.

That is an extremley beautiful event. Count your self lucky to have witnessed it.

Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.

007 was going nuts about this one night at the camp recently. He was yelling for me to come look, but I was sleeping, and I've seen it so many times, I just rolled over. It is really cool.

I went diving in Egypt off Sharm El Sheik and man was it insane at night! Bubbles any current or movement by your fins, hands etc... We hardly needed our glow sticks because of the light given off by our exhaust bubbles

                              new years eve of 2007

a neon blue phosperous was in the surf on an ankle breakers night. As the waves would break at the shoreline, they would glow a brilliant blue.

I've got a vid but it is the wrong format for upload.
