On Friday I arrived at the ramp to find Lurefisher and Dbarham already there. We launched and headed out with destruction on the brain. They also brought a bunch of supplies for the camp, including some Joe's BBQ spices and rubs. Also got me a new Joe's BBQ hat. Thanks! We loaded up the tools and headed over to the Ghost Camp. Man, those guys got to it like they knew what they were doing. They got all but one window removed and we hauled them all to my truck. Freakin' awesome job guys, and a big Blockade Runners attaboy to you both!
One of the interesting things on the day was my steering, which somehow had gotten hooked up backwards. Sneekypete showed up and he and Lurefisher dove in and fixed that while Duane and I got the steaks he had brought going. TALK ABOUT GOOD! A great dinner and a fixed boat. I was happy.
After dinner we did some serious front porch sittin', punctuated by Sneeky regaling us with tales of his conquests, both piscatoral and otherwise. Finally everyone crashed. Everyone but me slept out under the stars. The breeze was delicious and the skeeters were few. It was a beautiful night.
Everyone had cleared out and was at work by the time I awoke in the morning. First thing I noticed was my boat had water in it pretty high up. So I got the pump going right away. I hoped that it was a faulty plug, but as my fears have been realized, it has electrolysis holes in it. I'm working hard on getting that repaired right now. While I was pumping it out, a fellow in a yak paddled up and introduced himself. He wanted to talk about the flag, so I told him about Blockade Runners and we had a nice history conversation. Y'all know I like that
Not too long later, I saw ynggun and redsticker rounding the bend in the bayou. Just as they arrived, Glen's son and grandson came from the other direction and we all met on the dock. We sat for a while and talked until they had to go. It was their first time ever at the new camp, but they had memories of when the Ghost Camp was a palace.
I wasn't sure if Austin (ynggun) and his dad Mark (redsticker) were up for helping with the destruction, so I asked if they wanted to help out. Mark said, "Well, we brought 2 sledge hammers and crow bars, so whaddya think?"
We headed over to the Ghost Camp and they climbed up and started smashing things up and throwing it down to me. Once we had a full load, TMO (Tom) called to say he was almost at the launch. We headed in and loaded all we could in Tom's truck, and put the rest in mine. Tom was still hobbled from his injury, so he couldn't come back out, but it sure was good to see all those windows headed out like that. Thanks Tom!
We headed back to the camp for another bunch of relaxing in the breeze and Austin and I had some of Duane's leftover steaks for lunch. MMMMMMMMMM. Finally they shoved off around 3pm and I got a call from 007 that he would be headed down to the ramp about 6pm, so I packed up a few things and headed for the ramp. One of the things I have to do is keep my cat, Fat Albert medicated. I got to Angleton, took care of Fat Albert, and dumped the load of debris in my driveway. Then I zipped back to the ramp and got back in the boat just as 007 arrived. Good timing all around.
We spent the afternoon relaxing and even did a little fishing and met some of the neighbors for a beer. For dinner we had what else? STEAKS! Didn't take long for us to be out for the count. I planned to sleep late, and boy did I.
I awoke around 10:30 and 007 already had caught a slam off the dock. I decided to do a little fishing too, but had no real luck. Just as I was about ready to go hit the Ghost Camp, CAZ called to say he was coming out to help. To take up some time before he got there, I headed down below to continue the cleanup. It was the first time I had gone down there since Glen passed away. It was tough to look over and see his back porch project still untouched. I busied myself with organizing some recovered hardware until CAZ called.
We hit the ramp and picked him up and went right to work. 007 built a scaffold inside so we can tear out the roof without getting on top of it. CAZ busted hump throwing me stuff down. We headed back to the ramp and unloaded, then back to the camp for a lunch of pork loin. Then we did some side porch sitting out of the sun. Sure is nice to have a place in the shade. I got everything cleaned up and ready to roll. I thought we'd hit the Ghost Camp hard one more time, but we were all pretty much spent, so the last run was mostly just a cleanup. CAZ whisked 007 home and I sat at the ramp watching the boat drain for what seemed like forever.
Sunday was a good birthday, except for the diagnosis on the Mudda. All in all it was a helluva weekend and we got a LOT done on the old place. Hopefully the Mudda will be ready with a quick fix by Thursday. Rumor has it we should be getting the new roof this week!
Special thanks to all who came out this weekend. Y'all were all a huge help and it wouldn't be progressing without you all. If anyone wants to come bust some things up, I plan on hitting it this weekend, depending on what happens with the roof, and the Mudda. - Sandy
From 1970-1997, true heaven on Earth existed on the banks of Bayou Cook. "Hey Dad, Thanks for buying the Camp."
