How does a few individuals make a difference for thousands for generations to come?
Well if you have fished any of the Lutes Marine tournaments in 2008 or 2009, you have contributed.
A percentage of all entries in the tournament is donated to the Lake Jackson Sea Center, flounder foundation. This year we are on track for raising a $1,000 for the flounder foundation.
Along with any live flounder that have been brought in this year, they were taken over to the SC and dropped into the tanks.
These fish brought in are used for restocking efforts in the Galveston Bay system. The biologist only use fish from where they plan on restocking. So if you have brought in a LIVE flounder, the fish could be a part of restocking for numerous generations of fish for multiple years. The offspring will be put back into our local Galveston bays, and they will continue the cycle of life. And you had a helping hand.
All of our children and grandchildren will have a shot at a specie we are helping to recover.
Lutes is holding another event this Saturday, and one of the divisions is the greatest weight of two live flounder.
Here is the link to the details
What is the best ways to help keep them alive?
- Fish need to breath, so getting them O2 is a necessity, keep a them in a live well separate from bait, and out of the sun.
Do constant water changes and try to keep the water cool, as heat keeps oxygen out of the water. I freeze a water bottle and put it in the holding tank to help keep the temp down
- To string or not to string ?
The flounder is a very hardy fish, unlike a spec, but stringing one will open it up to disease and pathogens that could kill the fish. Dead flounder are good to eat, but do not help restocking, so please do not string the fish.
(BTW- Texan1 (Thomas Barlow) who sells O2 systems donated a set up for the season to help keep the fish alive for the Sea Center)
We have a goal of 20 live flounder Saturday, so help the Sea Center and come out and participate this weekend.
If you decide not to enter, and just want to help the flounder, come by with a live fish, and it will be added to group.
Good luck and thanks for the support.
