  • ATV's on the Beach

    Hey Guys,

Saturday, I took a few buds out to do some fishing at the jetties. We caught a few trout and had a great time. The gulf was really flat so we ventured to some of the rigs just east of the North Jetties. We caught and release about 20 sharks. We had fun fighting those frisky critters. We then decided to run toward Crystal Beach and fish the surf out of the boat. We got real close (third and second sand bar) and stated catching trout, blue fish, Pomp's etc.. I was watching the people on the beach and noticed about a dozen ATV's running up and down the beach. Now these weren't law enforcement etc. These were people just having a good time. I'm not talking about jeeps etc... I mean Artic Cats, Suzuki Quads etc...??? I thought it was illegal to drive these unlicensed atv-4wheelers on the beach?

    Has the laws changed????

I always wanted to rig my Suzuki Eiger with some rod holders and Small Ice Chest holder and take off down the beach in search of fishy water. Especially down Padre Island, Places where you may not make it with a full size vehicle.

Can any of you shed some light?

I really depends on where you are on the beaches these days. I know at Terramar you can not have any motorized vehicles outside the marked off areas. I really think they should allow battery operated golf carts anywhere on the beaches, but I think it is for safety versus envirnomental.

I hear them all the time around SLP as well.

On the matter I am pretty sure that by Tx state laws, navagatable public beaches are considered the same as public roads requiring licensed vehicles as the the only legal transport.

But I see them to, even at SLP. I guess it just matters as to what beach is being patroled on a given day and even if so, the officer may turn a blind eye.

Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.
