  • Motor reverse gone

Taking Westend's suggestion and posting on here. This past weekend I launched the boat and reverse was gone. It's a 1997 Mercury 115 offshore in excellent condition. I do however have nuetral and forward and dont hear any grinding when shifting in each. I certainly don't want to be nickeled and dimed so I was hoping for any insight and potential cost so I can be prepared when taking to a mechanic. Thanks ahead for any insight.

It's hard to give a cost of repairs without knowing what is exactly wrong with it, you can't go wrong with Evans Marine, he is honest & won't nickel & dime you. The problem could be a simple adjustment, stretched cable, or damage in lower unit, he will inspect it & give you an honest estimate.
      Today is a new day!!

Tony Jenkins is close by you Rob if you want to take it to him. As I suggested, I'd let Bryan take a look at Evan's Marine but knowing you'd rather not pull it over 20 miles you may want to give Tony a call. He never BS'd us.

I have been real busy no being able to be online lately, so sorry for the delay. If you getting forward and neutral it's probably not the cable adjustment. Sounds like clutch dog is worn out and not engageing the rear gear. Honestly it would be cheaper to get a new SEI SE205 Lower unit with three year warranty. It is 900.00 shipped, and comes with new water pump already installed. It would cost you about 800.00 to rebuild and the warranty is only 3 months unless we changed all the internals and then you up around 1800.00
If you where intrested I would need to know the serial and model off your motor to determain the gear ration and see if your shift shaft would work on there unit and not require a replacment and removal of power head to do so.
