  • ? about the birds

After fishing with my buddies yesterday and getting into the birds, I noticed that there was no particular pattern of which bait that the "keepers" would hit. We were all catching dinks and I was the only one that caught any keepers. I caught the majority of them on pumpkin seed chartruse but I caught the 3 biggest ones on a white gulp shrimp, a pink devil eye and a chicken at night with a flashlight. I hear of everyone using one "go to" plastic, but that wasn't the case yesterday.

never experienced it, but heard that the bigger fish hang deeper and at the edges, so you should fish with heavier jig heads to get it down to them.

I've seen it when it doesn't matter what color, shape or action you are throwing, just as long as you throw it in the right place.

It is the rough days we I tend to go with my "go to" colors and what color that is depends on the water color and sometimes the area.

Glad to hear you still have that pink devileye working. There are more where that one came from.

In deeper water use a heavier jig head such as 3/8. In shallow, throw around the outside. You might not draw a hit every cast but the ones you get might possibly be bigger. Then again, sometimes you just get lucky and have the hot stick.
        Just my experiance.

So, do you just pick one and stick with it? Or does everyone throw something different and see what's working the best?

It was kind of like when we were in Greens on Friday. We were all throwing something different and I stuck two on two cast and you and Josh did even get a bump. Go to the hot color, too bad for us the wind shifted about that time so we couldn't prove that the pearl devileyes were the ticket.

I can actually be serious at times...............and this is one of them.

I guess it's the lack of alcohol.

I like throwing tops under the birds, I usually can get the bigger ones in the school to come up for the surface bait. I have had clients catching schoolies under the birds then I throw out a topwater and start catching keeper Trout. Heppens alot.

Is there a certain top that you like to throw?
