  • Personal Best Trout Question

What do you folks consider the judge for calling a trout your personal best is it length or weight?

Reason I'm asking is the trout I caught Friday, it was shorter but weighed more that my previous Personal best. So which one would you call your PB?

Both actually. My personal best is 30". My heaviest is 9lbs. So anything over those would be a new personal best. My personal goal is a Trout over 30" and double digit weight out of Galveston Bay.

I caught a 31" back in 87 that only weighed in a meesly 7#, but I had a 28 1/2 that went 8.5...the 28 1/2 was by far what i consider my better trout. Fat as a football and pretty colors to boot...It now hangs on my wall. I'm with Pimp on this one...still looking for a 30er with double digits!

I've caught 3 over 30" and none of them pushed past 7LBS, I have yet to land a trout over 30" on rod a reel, seems my fly rod is the only way they bite my lure

It doesn't really matter does it?
I fished for 35+ years before I ever even heard of "personal best".

I haven't fished as long as Kenny, but I never heard of a personal best before I moved here. I don't even remember making too big of a deal about a huge fish. Just throw it in the cooler and eat it with the rest of them. Stupid Louisiana people

D-Rock, I'd say whichever one you enjoyed catching the most. Or, in true fisherman fashion, you could hybridize them in a small exageration and say you caught a 28 1/4 that weighed 8.1 pounds. Works for me bro.

What Kenny said. I think it's what you want it to be. I never knew what the weight of my fish were till I bought a Boga a few years ago. I got a 29" that went only 7 1/2 lbs but I'm still looking for that 30"+ to put on the wall. Just my 2 cents.

I think what matters is what you think matters......My PB was 26 3/4, 7lb on topwater, but my best trout was a 24 1/2" that weighed 6lb even caught in 40 degree temp w/30 mph winds and was the only bite of the day. I will remember that one long after I catch a few 30s!

I hear what y'all are saying. I don't know where the term "Personal Best" came from but I do know that a lot of folks could tell you what their biggest fish was. This question came up a work yesterday after I showed some guys the pictures of my fish Friday. I'd not really thought about it too much before that. If I had to pick between the two, I'd have to pick the one Friday. The fish I caught way back in 1992 was a special fish but I was totally alone when I caught it. Friday when that fish came in the boat it was almost like we had just won the Super Bowl or Daytona 500. To say the least it was electrifying all three of us were pumped and I was very happy to share the moment with my Son and a Good Friend. So to put this to bed, I’ll always remember the fish from 92, but it will fall short of being my most memorable catch, that would have to be the one Friday.

I will take either trout any day of the week. My personal best is a 29 1/2" trout the weighed 8.4 lbs. I caught it several years ago in the surf. Still looking for one of 30 and in the double digits

I think weight takes precedence over length, however I think a longer trout looks better on the wall. By the way Derek, are you getting your big trout mounted?

Well it is sitting in the frig to be cooked this evening. I took all the measurements and got the pictures so I'm thinking of a fiberglass mount. I didn't even consider a mount for the other fish, I was waiting for the magic 8 pounder.

By the way the fish was 27 3/4 in length, but her girth was 26 1/2. She was almost as big around the middle as she was long.
