  • Seaweed all over the beach!

Took our lab to the beach today and the seaweed was as tall as he is in certain areas. Question.... Isn't it early for that this to happen? I have a picture, but can't figure out how to upload from my IPad.

By the way, I know some of you will say it is good for the beach, but if you don't live down here it is hard to say that. It stinks!!!!

I'm down here at the other end of Texas by SPI ... the weed and Man-O-War seemed to come in a few weeks early, as well as some rather nice smacks (Spanish Mackerel). Now through early May is "seaweed season" and it has to do with cold fronts from north winds and some currents that swoop it into shore. It doesn't matter how much trash is on the beach ... the important part is being able to cast in the surf without getting a pound of brown - Sargasso seaweed.

It is good? Lots of plankton live in the weed, and the plankton attracts the bait fish and then your predators eat the bait. That's why the seagulls are always pecking on the stuff. The ling run is timed to do exactly this. Those Man-O-War also feed on plankton and small larval fish too. It means that there's lots of sealife and certainly no "dead zone" as the environmentalists want you to think. It might smell bad but at least it's not a fish kill, which is bad - and hard to keep dogs from snacking on the dead fish because that makes them sick for about 3 days, especially if there was any red tide in it.

When the water hits about 73 and is trout green, I'll be hitting the beach pretty hard for the spring run. Tight lines and see ya on the beach!
