  • Started Crab Trap Clean-up Early...with my props...

So, the weather was unfavorable for boating or fishing this past Saturday, but cabin fever overcame all else. Myself, Overkiller(FWE member), my son and a freind headed out about 10:30 am from Clear Creek/Egret Bay. We traveled out to Redfish Island and fished along the ship channel for awhile before heading into Moses Lake, our original destination. We made our way to the Northeast corner deep hole, and drift fished across it a few times. We landed 1 flounder, 16" for our troubles. It was around 4m and we knew we had a long trip back into the wind and waves, so we decided to head in. While slowly idling across Moses Lake toward the flood gate, in about 3' of water, we heard a clunk, then the engine stopped. I knew we had hit something under the water, but didn't know what. I trimmed the outdrive up(Bravo 3, duo-prop) to find a crab trap wrapped in and around both props. This trap had no marker at all, so there was no way of knowing it was even there. We tried to free it with wire cutters, but it was just too much of a mess. We were dead-in-the-water at this point.

I've never had the misfortune to use my BoatUS towing insurance until that day. They were at our location within 45 minutes. I was impressed. It would have been about a 4hr tow, except we had them take us to Eagle's Point and drop the boat, then they gave me a ride to my truck at Egret Bay, and I drove to get the boat. We made it home by 8m. Not too bad, considering...

Anyway, there is now 1 less abandoned crab trap in our fishery...you're welcome.

I'm waiting for a pic to be emailed to me and I'll post it for your veiwing pleasure.

We experienced no damage to the outdrive or props. It took about 5 minutes to get the crab trap off of the props in my driveway.

I carry a pair of tin snips for this very reason. 5 minutes of cutting & you should be free.

If you have ever fished in West Bay you'll eventually run across a trap. I've hit 6 so far I think my prop is a magnet for them.

The duo-props made it extra difficult to cut away. That and 54 degree water. If it had been summertime, someone would have jumped in the water and got it loose, but it was cold and windy.

I've had the insurance for 3 years and have never used it, so I was due. Cheap at $150/year.

Towing note: What alot of people don't realize is you pay for towing with your boat insurance policies already, and you could have pay it again with a tow service.

Check your policies to see if you have towing, before throwing down additional money.

If you only run Galveston you should look at SeaTow hopefully one day they'll be a sponsor here.

BoatUS also holds my insurance policy.

Be careful in Jones Lake, I've dodged several unmarked ones out there. If I get in on the cleanup in my little skiff I'll limit out in an hour right there. I don't like crabs or traps but understand folks need to make a dollar.

I don't have a problem with marked traps. They help Me navigate in unknown water sometimes, but the unmarked traps are no good to anyone.

A good crab trap costs between 25-35 dollars. How on Earth can these people afford to lose this many?

I also never understood putting the traps out and then just leaving them out, I don't have that kind of money to waste and even if I did have a lot of money still wouldn't do it.

Well if the water wasn't 54 degrees I'm quite certain the tow wouldn't have been needed. But a ride from Jones lake to league city after joining the polar bear club would have equaled hypothermia. Trust me it was cold enough bundled up dry huddling under the top. That said the tow service was awesome, I'll be springing for it before my boat hits the water, they were there quick. Fortunately they dropped the boat in San Leon since a 3 hour tow with no beer didn't sound fun. Counter rotating props makes for a mess with a crab trap. It looked pretty bad on the water but I guess it came off pretty easy on dry land. Still beat sitting on the couch.
