I only use Suffix 12lb mono. I tried braid and didn't like the fact that I didn't get any stretch. I actually prefer the stretch. Everybody's a little insane. I picked up a 5,000 yard spool of Suffix 12lb for $5. So I'm married to it for at least the next 10 years, probably more.

I like the stretch like Coach said. Ive killed more fish over the last 30 years with ande 12# so I geuss Its just a comfort factor. My dad fished it and that is just were I am at plus I like the price. I think the key if you fish mono is to keep it changed out. I respool all the time. I go thru one spool a year around 12 bucks. Thats maintaining up to 4 reel during the year. We all have different opinions and all them will work. I think its just a matter of committing to one and staying consistent!

Interesting point made by one gentleman about the sinking rate. I never noticed that much, but mono does allow some water intrusion to help it sink, while braid tend to carry some air in the micro-fiber. I don't know the science and maybe Gilbert's "slick braid" resists that effect. But under a 10x magnifier, regular Power-Pro is some hairy stuff. So with 1/16th or 1/8th oz. jigs you might want to convert to mono. I like to bounce heavier lead on the bottom but hey, we're all different.

The point about braid is that you can feel the fish hit so easy. Thus many can avoid lost fish or deep-hooked fish especially when we get into the winter slow mode. It's more like a bang instead of a limber mono line. You have to resist the urge with braid to rip the lips off a feesh!

Braid rests on top of the water and doesnt let light lures sink at all when its being blown around on the surface. Also, forget beingable to work your bait in chop, tge braid sits on top and gets stuck in the water.

If your only fishin in 1-3ft, braid is fine. Anything deeper and you want mono.

I throw 12lb stren low vis green mono with topwaters cause of the stretch. I use 30# suffix braid, way easier casting than power pro imo, with a 6 ft 20# fluro leader on pretty much everything else. The fluro leader helps the braid sink and doesnt get nicked up on oysters as quick as mono does

Braid is hands down the best for topwaters. To compensate for the no stretch, i set my drag to the bare minimum and apply thumb pressure accordingly after the hookup. Once i can judge the fight in the fish, i set the drag.

For leader, 2ft 20lb mono to norton twist on with SMALL loop not. If the loop is too big the front treble will catch and some times, cut the leader.

If your leader is too heavy and/or long, it will sink, making your topwater nose dive, instead of popping. If your in shallow shell, have fun losing fish and expensive topwaters due to scuffed up mono sinking and snagging.

I have a theory that using mono with tops scares every fish between you and the lure, it sinks when you let the topwater pause for 10-15 seconds (you do let it pause right?) And then rips back to the surface when you restart the retrieve.

Also, try getting a big, 3 treble hook super spook to do its thang' after youve bombed it 40 yards down wind with mono. You look like your fly fishing. With braid, every mm you reel/twitch, your lure moves the same distance.

that's crazy talk. braid sinks. I fish 70% 1/16 oz jig heads and 30% 1/8oz jig heads and I have no problem with my bait hitting bottom in 5-7' of water.
