  • Best Way To Get Around The Flats

Ok guys, as most of y'all know I have a Whaler 13 sport. I do not have a trolling motor, or poling platform/push pole. What would be the best way for me to get around to those reds on the flats and sight cast to them? Will a telescoping boat hook work well enough for the time being? Thanks in advance for all of your replies.

A cheap solution is a push pole. You don't need a platform. Use a push pole to stealthily get to the pods of reds.

Yea the boat hook will work temporarily. Not great but usable. Especially since your boat's smaller. After a while it'll start to bend though so you will eventually need something else.

Get out and wade real slowly! That's what I do and it's very effective

x2! That works as well. Just remember to anchor your boat. I did that with my yak one time and it was a few hundred yards away when I turned back around. LOL

Yep, that's a good way to do it. I really love using my kayak on the flats when stalking reds, it's quiet and can cover a lot of ground. You also can carry more gear than when wading.

Mini-x Fan: If you plan on doing this a lot and don't mind spending the money, a trolling motor is a nice way to cover the flats with your boat. It's quick and pretty quiet. It is also in my opinion, easier to control your boat with while fishing than a power pole.

This is kind of a random question, but how much do y'all think a good trolling motor will run me?

Pole from the bow, engine forward.

Academy has a 50# thrust troll motor for your boat $200.00. It is set up for a transom mount, but very easy to turn the handle around, and make a small bracket for the front of your boat, and it will work just fine on a small boat like yours.

                          Push Pole or TM.

I find that most areas I target fish the bottom is so soft that you'll never make it more than 6' from the boat...

Yea, but he said flats. Not any flats in west bay like that. Your doing bayous and lakes. All the flats in west bay are wadeable. Some are soft but not to bad. Plus soft this time of year is a good thing.

True in the bay everything is fairly easy to wade.

I fish back lakes and further East towards Sabine.

You better not be in my duck hole Saturday morning! We'll have words...
