Deer lease

Well I made it back. The trip did not go as planned since I got a phone call Thursday afternoon from my friend. He asked me if I wanted to stop by his ranch in Utopia and try to let the air out of a free range Axis. Since no one was going to be at the deer lease that evening I said sure and rolled in to his place that evening. We had a few rattlers and sat around the fire pit telling old stories.
He has a 2200 acre high fence where he is raising trophy deer and various exotics. It has a few hundred acres along the countyroad so the high fence it out of site. He told me that he had seen two nice Axis out there fighting and running does. So we woke up Saturday and went on a brutal hunt . I had to army crawl out the front door and peep up behind the rock wall surrounding his house. Sure enough there he was. Got in some award position and finally he made the right move and I let the air out of him. It was pretty sweet. I know it sounds easy but I can assure you those dudes are super paraniod and where spooky. I think he may go 28-29" Dressed out 200 lbs.
His deer guy showed up for work around that time and hauled it up to the deer operation house and took care of business for me. I gave him several bags of fresh trout fillets for his efforts. We drove around the high fenced area and was lucky enough to see a few deer pushing the 200 class,Super wide black buck and some fallow deer. What a place he has there. Probably one of the nicest places I have ever been.
So I headed out of there to the deer lease. Pulled up and it was just as expected. After closing that first gate behind me and seeing that red dirt road it was as good as I had anticipated if not better. Cracked a top on a cold one and cranked up 680 am. The first song was "hello country bumpkin" funny how that worked out. Somewhere along the way I know the played "Marie Laveaux". That old dog was still there BTW and lazy as ever.
Hunted that evening saw some nice buck and was surprise two 10 pointers showed up that will break high 150s that we did not see all of last year. Saturday I located a nice mature 8pt but he did not cooperate with the program. I'll be after him in the up coming weeks. Today I took a guest out and had a 8pt management deer I planned to have him shot. We showed up and it went just as planned. The deer came out around 7am and at 7:20am he took his last step. It took me twenty minute to tell the guy to shoot since he almost hyperventilated. Funny how a trashy arse deer can get people in such a state of hysteria. Just kidding it was the biggest deer he had ever shot at and I did not tell him I was gonna have him shoot it. He thought we were going to shoot some spikes there. He definetely smoked it. The deer drop in its tracks. I told him good job, nice shot and gave him a nice hand shake. When we got to the deer it was awesome to see someone that excited. Man I think he shook my hand a dozen time and kept telling me thanks for taking him and letting him shoot the deer .
The reason I did it was his Brother in law had brought him down and had told him he could only shoot spikes. When we showed some video of some management deer that needed to be shot. He volunteered himself to shoot the one we had piced. The guy has shot many deer that blow these deer away. That made me wonder why would some one shoot a deer that does not come close to a PB when someone is there that it is a deer of a lifetime for. Well I can tell you wacthing him shoot that deer was way more fun than me shooting it. Hey I gutted it and sent it up to the check station. It was 6 1/2 YO and dressed out 170 lbs.
Had a great time. Here a few pics.Bacon Bacon Bacon!!!
