I like it all, some I listen to more than others. I grew up with 2 sisters and a piano in the house, so I know all the classic piano concertos. I mostly listen to Classic Rock, Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Greatful Dead, Zydeco, local Texas artists.
Interesting thread J. I read this thread last night and it got me thinking. Jhua and I had a totally opposite upbringing. That is what makes this cool. He and I can go fishing and be from two totally different places and come together as fishermen and have a blast with eachother.
I have several memories of the songs played by my Father, Uncle and older cousins that still take me back to my childhood. At a very young age, I was surrounded by bikers. Not the kind you see cruising around Kemah. I mean the real deal. Most of them are dead now. I attended parties and have been inside just about every bar in Alvin before I was out of the 3rd grade. There was always 70's and 80's rock on the radio or juke box. The smell of beer, weed and motorcycle exhaust was in the air. The James Gang would be blasting in the garage and I would be in a dark corner flipping through as many Easyriders as I could before I got caught. Man, I haven't thought about this stuff in a long time. Anyways, here are a few songs that make me think of the male role models in my life:
Jim Daddy - Post biker days on a trip to SLP to do some wade fishing or pier fishing. The car we were in was an old white POS '64 Impala he bought out of field. The floor had huge holes and grass growing out of what little carpet it had. He blasted Alabama out of the single rear speaker all the way from Alvin to Freeport.
My Uncle Earl - My Uncle was a Houston Oilers season ticket holder for 25 years. I think he was drunk for all 25 of them. There were a few instances were he could not find anyone to join him for a game and as a last resort, he would take his little nephew. We would leave the house and stop at the store for two cigars and two tall boys. He would light up a cigar and pop open an ice cold beer in a brown paper bag "koozie" and insert a cassette of the baddest, rockin' music to ever hit these ears......ZZ Top.
Ex-Con Cousin - I have an older cousin that I thought was a total badass. His room was plastered in metal magazine pictures and Playmates. He would stage fights between all the younger boys. We were given balled up tube socks for gloves and would fight to the death (or until someone started crying). He would crank the latest on greastest at that time. I am talking about Motley Crue.
Here is some more Texas country! Brandon Ryder, John Slaughter, Max Stalling, Cody Canada, Hayes Carll, and one more The Turnpike Troubadours! Great music!
