  • 9/11/01 Boat Lift

I had never heard this story, nor even considered it. The largest sea-lift rescue in history 9/11 out of NYC. Larger than Dunkirk in WWII.

500,000 people in nine hours. Amazing.

Man that liked to choke me up, guys.

I'll tell ya one thing, I was on a NY Waterway ferry and they let me run the sticks, even docked the sucker. I never saw such wild currents and waves, had to come in full speed, reverse at full throttle, and then push forward against the dock without smashing the boat while coming in sideways like a crab. Kinda cool to run the sticks on a coupla 400 HP Cummins, but I was nervous as could be. That was in February 2002, right after 9/11 and the captain made us stop for 10 minutes by what they called "The Hole." It couldn't have been much over 40 degrees but we all went on the deck and paid our respects. It was a very moving experience.
