Stringer....

My father lost his stringer while we were fishing last weekend and needs a new one. He doesnt want a cable coated with plastic one. He wants a rope one that is real stiff so it doesnt tangle.

I have a stringer that I bought from Paul Browns house a few years back. It is 10' long and green, and really fat in diameter. It doesnt get tangled up at all and I love it. Does anyone know where Paul used to get these stringers from? Or who are they made by?

Pops has already looked at the Fish-n-Hunt, Foreverlast, stinkypants, fishslick, Grind, Hookset..... but I think he really likes the one I have and he's wondering where to get one.

Hmmm good question...

Grind TT / HookSet & Fish-N-Hunt would be the first people I'd call. I personally use the HookSet & love it.

Sounds like he wants YOURS-I'd give him yours and take the cheaper ones he has-tell him it's a "TwoFer"-two cheapies for one good one. In 30 years, I've used up 2 stringers (lost a few though), so it aint like the cheapies bust in a few months/days.

I wish I knew where to find those old numark stringers. Those were/are better than the new overpriced cable ones. Cable is .10 a foot at HD and they sell the stringers for $30. That brass spike ain't that dang expensive.

Nobody knows what kind of stringer those were in Paul Browns garage he used to sell? Just a simple, thick rope stringer with a float.

I don't know which ones Mr. Brown used to sell, but my brother bought one similar to what you described at FTU. I would check there.

You might be able to re-dip the FTU stringers to make 'em stiffer or...Buy some cotton rope cut to length, buy a gallon of shrimp net dip from Hillman's. Dip and dry hang it several times (stiff as you want it). Find the right diameter stanless steel rod, grind one end to a point and drill press the other to accept the rope (diameter). Put your rope in and put a s/s screw into the side of the spike - make sure it grabs the rope (stringer now!). Grind the head of the screw off flush...The large diameter keeps rope (bigger fish) from rolling and tangling, and swimming between your legs. Mine's 20 yrs old and still going strong. IMHO sliding fish off the stringer is secondary to manhandling a decent stringer of fish...sounds like your dad is old school...

Thanks Coon, I've been wondering where to get the net dip. I'm sure it isn't cheap, so maybe we could dip a lot of 'em. My old Numark rope is the worlds greatest tie-down rope in my truck. That rope was braided really tight to make it stiff.

If Hillman's doen't have it, they can probably direct you to a marine supply locally that may have it. It's the same dip they put on shrimp nets...
