Trout biting in big numbers

Anglers wade fishing the surf before the arrival of Thursday’s thunderstorms had a field day catching speckled trout, Spanish mackerel and other fish. Beach front conditions are excellent and, as Jason Reuter, Aunt Margie’s Bait Camp, put it, trout are as thick as schools of mullet in the surf.
Reuter reported a 20-inch trout and slot red caught by Jerry Foreman and a 29.5-inch trout landed by Daniel Bultrush.
Thomas Moore and his son Tommy, on leave from duty in the U.S. Marines, fished the surf off Crystal Beach early Thursday and had nonstop action on speckled trout and a lot of cut lines by aggressive Spanish mackerel. While many of the trout were less than 15 inches and had to be released, the anglers managed to retain 12 up to 21 inches in length. Live shrimp fished under popping corks did the trick.
Sergio Martinez walked the North Jetty and fished about halfway to the boat cut late Wednesday using fresh dead shrimp for bait. On the way back, Martinez had to carry a heavy stringer loaded with sheepshead, black drum and a slot red.
Eric Hamilton fished Cold Pass on Wednesday and landed three flounder to 19 inches and six ladyfish. Live shrimp bottom bumped was the bait.
The party boat Capt. John made a trip 20 miles east of the jetties Monday and found plenty of action for the 34 anglers aboard. The catch included 76 spadefish, 22 sharks, 18 kings, seven sand trout and two Spanish mackerel.
Local fishing clubs offer a lot of benefits, not only to anglers but the community as well. The West End Anglers Fishing Club is a good example of this. On Oct. 15, the group will host its third annual Redfish Showdown. The event provides fishing competition for anglers and benefits the Shriners’ Hospital for Children in Galveston.
This Showdown will take place at the West End Marina at Sea Isle on the west end of Galveston Island and will feature a barbecue dinner and raffle along with cash prizes and custom designed artwork by Roy Perry for the top five winners.
All of the proceeds will go directly to the children receiving rehabilitative and burn care at the hospital. For information about the tournament and about the club, visit www.fishwestend.com or call club founder Coe Parker, 713-594-4252.
