  • Need house call boat mechanic

    Hit offshore Sunday-no issues until coming in at Bridge at San Luis pass. Port motor won't power over 3000 rpms-had slowed to pass anchored boats at bridge, then hit throttles and port motor would not power up so motored in on starboard to house. Glad it didn't act up when 30 miles out.

    I need a mechanic to check it out-could be a power pack issue-not sure. 2004 Merc 115 carbed.

    Boat Mechanic recommendations needed. Boat is in Sea Isle house lift.

    Thanks,
    Robalo.

          Gregr;

          Can you explain? You mean like auto shut-down mode? No alarms sounded (which don't mean much) and water pressure gauge was showing normal water pressure. My cables have always been hard to push the throttles, so I am thinking cable may have stretched or almost snapped-certainly easier to get in forward or reverse right now compared to day before or earlier that day before issue occured., but again, no rpms-it does go in gear.

            Limp/Safe mode is designed to limit the rpms when an oil/fuel/temp issue happens. An alarm SHOULD sound when this happens.
            As far as the cable, it is VERY possible something happened in there as well, such as a cable, linkage, etc..

                  Happened to me with my Merc. Greg figured out that it was in limp mode because the battery was low. Had plenty enough juice to start the motor, but for some reason it wasn't enough to keep it out of the safe mode. I changed batteries and no problem. He knows his stuff.

                    Thanks Sandy. I have seen many of Greg's posts and yes, he knows his stuff. I hope it's the cable or power pack. Batteries are fully charged and other motor (twin 115s) would have or should have done same if was amperage/voltage issue, so I don't think that was/is it. But I will check and switch batteries-who knows-strange stuff happens on motors-hopefully it is simple.

                      Just remember..... guessing and throwing parts at it can get expensive really quick.
                      Could be a stator, trigger, switchbox, fuel issue, oil issue, cable issue, who knows?

                          Thanks Coe and Greg. I plan on doing some diagnosis on some items this weekend-such as power pack and cable.
