  • Great weekend again at Blockade Runners!

What a weekend at the camp. Headed out Friday at noon with 007. We unloaded everything at the camp and went for a drift in Bastrop Bay. First cast, 007 boated a nice flattie. Then nothin'! So we headed home for some relaxation, grub, and to get my new replacement fishing lights set up. I made some brat-dogs with onion, bell pepper, and cheese. Then I got to putting the lights together. Sadly my new stand came to me broken, but I rigged it up and we got the lights rolling right after sunset.

The bait was going wild in the lights and I gave it a little time to heat up as I made my usual phone calls to Dad and the other folks headed out to us on Saturday and Sunday. Just as I made up my mind to fish, I got a call from 2112 on the fishwestend.com board. He had just launched at the SLP ramp and was out for a bit of floundering. He came by and I told him what I thought would be some good spots on the map. We were talking on the dock when I non-chalantly threw out the first offering of the night and BAM! 21 inch trout. He had just asked if I would go floundering with him, and holding the fish up I said, "Maybe later." Instead of going floundering or jumping in on the trout, Mike headed into the camp for a "nap". I kept trying to wake him through the night, once even bringing a trout in to show him, but he was out for the count.

Well the fish were steady all night. I probably landed a good 25 or so, but only kept 6. Not one was under 15 inches, but I was being selective. Rat-L-Traps and sparkle beetles were the key. Right around 3am the bite turned off, but I did catch a bully of a 19 inch red just as I decided to call it a night. Wishing I was in Louisiana, I returned him to the briney deep.

Right then, 2112 came around the bend and said he needed a partner. So I wiped the weariness from my face and jumped in his flounder rig. It was certainly a neat experience, and he had 4 nice flatties in the box already, but the water had clouded up and we didn't stick any more. It was kind of surreal being out in the middle of nowhere at night. Thank goodness for GPS. I was as lost as you could be. Talk about a nice rig though. It was great to meet you 2112. Come on by anytime. I didn't think about the flounder until you were around the bend. I finally hit the sack at 4am, and had one of those happy camp sleeps.

Waking at 10am the next morning, I got word that VJER (Vic) from 2cool and his buddy Dean were heading down, so I cooked a big breakfast and got moving. When they arrived, Mike picked them up at the ramp. As soon as Vic hit the dock, he put on his mud shoes and jumped down to start working on the porch. I needed that motivation to get things going. He and Mike got started hashing things together and we were soon joined by Pasadena Man from 2cool. Hopefully he'll join us here on this board. Really nice young guy who ain't afraid to swing a hammer. Dean fished, but only managed a keeper flounder. Everyone else worked on the porch and I played gopher, (which is really my best role) and board cutter.

By around 4pm, the south side of the front porch was built! What a great feeling it was to walk out there and around the south side of the camp again. Mike called work for the day done and he headed off with Pasadena Man and CAZ from fishwestend, who had just arrived on his yak. They drifted Bastop Bay again and came back with a nice red. Meanwhile Vic nailed an awesome fat 24 inch speck from the dock. Of course I expertly netted it .

Dean had to get going soon after and Vic brought him back to Angleton, then came back down to spend the night, (Bringing some spicy Church's chicken with him, compliments of Pasadena Man.) It was his first time ever for Vic to spend the night. Vic is a good friend of mine here in town. We met on 2cool a few years back and he and his wife basically adopted me. He is the one that got me fishing at SLP in the first place. If not for him, I would never have found the camp. Well, he put everyone to shame. We got the lights fired up and he caught fish all night long. He probably got over 50 on the dock. Unlike the night before, they wouldn't have anything to do with arties and he had the live shrimp going. Vic shared his shrimp with the others and I just watched and enjoyed as he and Pasadena Man brought in fish after fish.

Around 3am, he called it a night and we all sat up talking in the living room until almost 5am. It was a really good time and it was great to have so many good folks at the camp. Vic and I finally retired and I didn't move until I got the call around 10am that Glen (The honcho) and TMO (Tom) from 2cool were at the dock ready to be picked up. (I don't know where those guys slept, but I hope they got some sleep.) Mike played water taxi and brough them out with a load of lumber. As soon as they arrived, we split up into 2 groups with Mike and Vic on the north side of the front porch, CAZ, Pasadena Man, Glen and TMO worked on the missing room, and I played gopher, again, my best role.

Pasadena Man had to cut out a little early, but he sure put his work in before leaving. CAZ finally cut out after a long day's work. I think he was tuckered out and not feeling so well. Sure hope you're feeling better man. You kicked butt. We all appreciate the help! Before the end of the day, we had the whole front porch done, and nearly the whole floor framed up on the missing room. What a weekend, what a Spring Break. Special thanks to all the guys making Blockade Runners a place to be.

Next week, the missing room goes up. Looks like we'll be ready for the new roof after the next 2 weekends. (Hint, hint to lurefisher ) In the next couple of weeks, we'll have the ceremonial flag raising. First one after Ike. Then it will truly be Blockade Runners again.

Here are a ton of pics. Some are near duplicates, but I'm late to bed and don't have time to go through them all. - Sandy

Yeah Man, we were 'spectin' gumbo and when y'all didn't show, we had to get Vic to bring us Church's. LOL. It wasn't too bad though.

Good to see you got on here Tom. Post up in the Welcome Forum. - Sandy
