Brennan's on Smith (Not "Brenner's), Damian's, Marks. Mandola's is pretty good, the old rainbow Lodge, but menu got stale-new location is OK, but not the best IMO. All others try to compare to them (Brennan's, Damians and Marks) and 99.99% fail to meet the grade. Pappas all sux-mass food-an upscale fast food type place IMO. Goode Company is what I consider average-bbq is C grade, seafood is C and the burger place is a C. Fertitas all sux-if I want frozen seafood, I'll go there (yuck). Trulucks-horrible last time there-seafood was bad-stunk/reeked-was old. McCormick & Schmidt's-happy hour was good-they kill ya on drink prices to make up for cheap H.H. prices, so have one drink, eat HH food and go somewhere else, but appetizers are cheap during H.H.-seafood was again stinky-serves old fish. Lupe Tortillas sux also-dirty kitchens, bad service and mediocre at best for messican-they sell gringo food, not Tex Mex. Small family owned places for Tex Mex are almost always best-authentic and real cheeses usually-Cubano food gets my vote over Tex Mex. Not a fan of "Chain Steakhouses" either-most are SSDD and generally taste the same-some age beef correctly, while most (again 99.99%) do not-should be dry aged beef for best flavor and tenderness.

Ya don't get to be as big as me eating crapo food!! well, maybe so, but I prefer good food.

Rainbow Lodge (Ella & TC Jester) back in the day it was Le Tour de Arjon (Sp?)

Brenner's on the Bayou is good-service is good-the origianl Brenner's is still off katy between Wilcrest and West Belt-Fertita owns them, but Brenner's on the Bayou has a great HH, the Blue Bar is nice when weather is nice (except the Eurotrash factor) and service is great-much better than V&Anthony's-I figured same steak-seems a little better at BotB.

The new location for Rainbow Lodge was LaTour de Argent.

I forgot Fuad's. Just tell Joseph what you want and he'll cook it ($$$$). service is first class-back when smoking was allowed, we would have cigars, some snotty lady told Joseph that our cigars stank and wanted us to move-he told her to leave!! The Palm for lobster and JT's girlfriends (hookers). Club No Minor for grain alcohol maggoteaters-food sux tho and years ago, the "ladies" from next door would show and later dance topless on the tables on Thursday nites-it helps to wallet whip the waiters-I always had a table and a dancer or two!!

Only two Carrabas are still family owned-Rosa lives by Voss location and other off Kirby-all other's are chains.

Sure there are some OK places, but I miss the old Texas cafes, steak roadhouses, BBQ joints, German beer gardens, sausage houses with the hogs out back, Czech bakeries with them kolachis, fiery Mexican places, and dockside crab shacks with real crabs in the cage. Now it's all Yuppified. Perhaps it's nostalgia, remembering those cool old joints. The breakfast and lunch cafes run by those old grandmothers and aunts were really something, could make catfish taste like heaven - but don't cuss or you're out! While certainly not 5-star, real Texas food is a real treat, different from New Mexico, Louisiana, or Southern cooking.

Sure, we can talk about the Oriental stuff and I love that stuff even a lowly bowl of Vietnamese Pho, a big influence in Houston and North Austin. I don't travel as much these days, and I'm sure there are some of the old joints still around. But it seems the younger generation just can't do it like the old folks made food by memory, some recipes handed down from great grandma and great grandpaw. Remember when they'd pencil whip your check and do the math by hand? It's almost laughable to think that today.

Oh yeah, I remember one thing I loved at those old cafes - pie! Don't get met started but some of those pies grammy made were pure heaven, fresh made that morning. Oh man I think I'm gonna cry now ....

Not in Houston but Mark's place (Bumpy's Fish Spot) on Moses Lake in Texas City has some great food. Not a large menu but if you hook it, he'll cook it!

For Seafood (near Houston), I'll drive down to Battleground Road (Now called Independence Pkwy). Head down 225 until the exit & head North towards the monument. On the right, before the Lynchburg Ferry landing is "The Monument Inn Restaurant" upstairs is by far the best lunch & scenic views of the channel. Never been for dinner but everything I have had for lunch there has been GREAT!

                                2112,

I have been wanting to try the Hoagie Ranch out. I have recently made countless trips to the Home Depot across the street and can't get my family excited about going in there for a sandwich. We should meet up at the Ranch one night or on a Saturday.

Have you tried The Pelican Grille on the other side of the lake?
