Speaking of crying...I almost cried on Friday morning when i lost my old pair of NuMark pliers. I had those things ever since i was a young stud back in 8th grade. It broke my heart worse than when my first every high school girlfriend left me. Oh well....

That will make you think twice about catch and string.I was in copano bay up near turtle bayou and a saltwater croc decide he needed my string of fish more than i did.I walked on water back to the boat after that.

I have one that the spike came off of that is "the worlds greatest truck tie-down rope"! It lasts and lasts.....

scary stuff, ive always wanted to try for a shark by the san luis pass. (In a boat) are they good eating? If yall have caught any before, what kind of rig were u using? Im assuming a heavy wire leader with some cut bait or maybe a live croaker...

Me and Dpop saw a 7'er at the pass about a month ago. There are some pretty big ones running the guts and flats at the pass. Be careful out there.

Very fun sport, and only the blacktip shark is fairly good eating (mako is the best, but rare). These guys use bait such as stingrays for bait, although jack crevalle works good, with large one or more hooks sewn into the meat like with dental floss. The "shark rig" is similar to an offshore reel that can handle 30 pound mono or better, a very stiff "broomstick" rod of perhaps 6-8 feet, and yes terminal tackle can include wire, cable, or very heavy "shark line" of several hundred pounds rating. I am no expert but I've helped the shark tournament guys, such as using a kayak to pull the bait out into the deeper water. SLP would make me nervous with those screaming currents and I prefer the beach where I can drive right up to the water, but it is quite "sharky."

Sorry if this is boring but we usually release most all sharks, except maybe the smaller blacktips or one that looks foul hooked and might die. This involves cranking the shark close in as possible and then, when near beached, have somebody tail-rope the shark just like a rodeo. Then using a long-handled de-hooker, the hook is extracted, the shark pulled off the beach with the tail rope after a photo session with some measurements, and allowed to flop back into the deep water. Yes, I ran like a sumbeach too!

The smaller ones of about 3-4 feet are indeed OK eating, especially the beefy blacktip. The trick is to kill, bleed, gut, and ice that sucker down as fast as you can, since shark decomposes quickly and will have a very strong smell of urine unless you do it right. Some use a gun to kill them but a billy club works fine for me, just above and between the eyes where there's a small pea-brain. They fillet similar to a fish, really, and some slabs are prepared for a BBQ, like "redfish on a half shell." Loads of hot sauce, Tabasco, and similar takes some of the sharky taste out, and blackening or Tony Cachere isn't bad. After a good sizzle to make a crust on the outside, I usually tent it with aluminum foil and keep it on the fire until the thick parts are done. For the beach, tacos style seems to be a winner.

I learned another trick but haven't tried it yet. Get a nice and clean bucket of clean surf water (not fresh) about half full, add your shark slabs you want to cook, top off with ice to make a slush, and add several tablespoons of salt. Let sit. When the slush melts a bit, you can see little bubbles coming off the shark meat. That's ammonia from the shark, a nice thing to get rid of and from what I heard, really works.

I think you'll like it, but do like me and go with some experienced pros because sharking is, well, a little different and a bit dangerous. Some of the brutes they're catching are awesome large. I actually like watching them swim back out to sea.
