  • Red snapper season shortened

The 2011 season has been set, and it is the shortest so far, totaling just 48 days.

The bag and size limit of two fish per day measuring at least 16 inches in length did not change.

NOAA Fisheries Service has published a final rule implementing increases in the commercial and recreational red snapper quotas in the Gulf of Mexico from 3.542 million pounds and 3.403 MP to 3.66 and 3.525 MP in 2011, respectively. A recent red snapper assessment update projected over fishing ended in 2009, and therefore, the total allowable catch can be increased from the existing 6.945 MP to 7.185 MP.

This action was evaluated in a regulatory amendment to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico.

The final rule will be published in the Federal Register today.

The recreational red snapper season opens June 1. NOAA Fisheries Service has projected the red snapper recreational quota will be harvested by July 18. The fishing season will close at 12:01 a.m. July 19.

The 48-day season is the shortest season to date since the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council chose to begin the season June 1, and is, in part, the result of the increasing size of the fish being landed.

THAT'S 7 WHOLE WEEKENDS-now plan for the wind and maybe 2 trips. Bullchit.

How come the commercials get the main haul? Oh nevermind, they run the Gulf Council mainly-bastages!!

That is ridiculous. I heard about it this morning on the radio show. I'm not an offshore guy, but still can't believe they cut it so short. With the high fuel costs, crappy economy, and now short snapper season, I would imagine this is a dagger in the heart to the party boat guys.

How? I know I'd rather pay $80 to go out all day on a party boat, knowing I'll get my 2 snapper. Heck going out in my boat I'd spend$400 just on fuel.

Not only is snapper only 48 days, but amberjack is closed June & July, which gives us a 2 week period at the end of July where recs cannot keep snapper or AJ.....complete BS.

As far as $80 for Party Boats-they have 7 weekends-so that is financial hurt and sucks for them. It's all bullchit based on Florida crapola and because NOAA, NMFS, Magnus-Stevenson Act and Gulf Council. We are not well represented, Texas or Louisiana, so we take the crap they dish out to us. Add the secret Obama Fish Management bull he tried 1.5 years ago and the picture gets clearer-just like the lack of Federal Disaster Assistance for the Texas wildfires (ignored by the Obcrapa Admin) and you will understand that Obcrapa HATES Texas and will do all he can in any underhanded way to farge us when possible. One o the few "transparent" things the POS has shown-hatred for Texas and all it stands for. We sure have a pretty shuttle at LBJ Space Center don't we?

Yeah the Gulf offshore fishing forums and shows are pretty lit up this morning.

But it's been getting worse and worse every year, all these regulations for reef fishing. I think they even have a regulation for triggerfish - which we used to call "bait snatchers" few would even try to eat.

Plenty of other keeper fish out there, like Spanish mackerel, triple tail, dolphinfish, black tuna, ling, and such.

Oh and you can catch all the red snapper and AJ all you want - you just can't box them up, gotta throw them back overboard.

Gonna be too windy to even get out tha anyways ... back to my piggy perch jerkin'!

Tripletails now are limited also-next will be Dorado. Tuna ya have to have a Migratory permit, ling show up in mass when usually too dang windy. What moron imposed limits on baitstealers (Triggers a year or so ago-shoot, ya get a crappie fillet from one 4# trigger) and there are THOUSANDS of them offshore Texas-let me guess-some Florida study-geez, I even saw some show where folks chartered to fish for triggers on the East Coast-WTH?

What ya say be true - but that HMS permit is nothing, $35 for the whole boat all year long.

By the way, them triggers are some fine eatin' fish if you know how to skin 'em!

Don't tell nobody, but some o' them offshore guys are beginning to talk about taking the law into their own hands.

I don't recommend that, as the fines are fierce, but it is legal to EAT 1.5 pounds of fish per person out there, long as you got some kind of "kitchen facilities." A propane grill and a bucket of ceviche fixin's will do.

It's a sad day though, and I say our Fishing Rights done got trampled by the socialists. Lately I've been more into bay fishing, catch 'n' release surf shark, and some weak attempts at marlin trolling.

Beats a day at the office my friend.
