  • Weedless topwaters

I was fishing some stuff last week that looked like I was on Conroe from the bass fishing old days with all the grass already grown up to the surface.

There were some fair trout laying in the grass and hard to get to in 15+ winds/ some in the grass and some in the smaller pot holes. Wind made it hard to hit the potholes with the shin deep+ mud it was hard to get close enough to cast to accurately.

I usually throw a spook jr with a #4 treble on the front and single Gam #1 hook on the back for good results.

Using two singles would not help this fishing condition from hanging up almost immediately if you missed the open spot.

You might have tried a weedless Tex posed worm hook but the better fish were liking top waters and the noise made by the dog walking

The question is what do you think would work to help keep the top water weedless and working on top of the grass to the next pot hole?

Use a heavier lure like skiterwalk.... it pulls harder and will yank the grass off.

Yum! Makes a fresh water that is almost the same size as a spook jr. It's a soft plastic use a weedless hook and you should be good

I've walked a lizard but never a frog.

Try them spinner baits with the jig on one side and the spinner on the other on a bent wire, works on the saltwater flats sometimes too.

Two Single hooks still hung up.

Thought about turning both hooks to the rear to see if that would help.

Thought about using hooks with the wire guard on them but still seems the will collect grass and foul.
Thought about a plastic trailer to make the back hook weedless.

I thought about using a spook jr or pup with just a single weedless hook on the back with some type of plastic trailer if needed.

Saw an interesting post where the coonas--- use spoon with a weedless hook and plastic trailer but still no rattle like a top water to drag over the grass.

                    Any other ideas?

take me to this spot so I can see what you are talking about and get a better idea on what will work.

years ago I used to fish east flats behind port a with a peg float about 14" to 16" in front of a weedless spoon. float kept the spoon above the grass, but fish will also attack the float.
also may try a buzzbait, they are fairly weedless.

When fishing around a lot of grass I swap out both hooks with the live bait ringed single hooks. Make sure both of them are facing the rear of the bait to keep from getting caught up on grass. The will still catch grass but most of time you can just pull through it. I used topwaters with single hooks this way for years have not had any problems with hookups.
