I picked the boat up Friday afternoon & trailered it to Baytown where I left it until Sunday... Well on my way out of town Friday I passed an older man (70's) messing with a trailer, infact I think he had just pulled over... I didn't think anything of it and continued on my way, besides he was going the opposite direction.
Several hours go by and I am now on my way back in from Beaumont, drop off the boat & pass the area where I saw the old man. Much to my surprise he is still on the side of the road, covered in grease & dirt. I drove past him & saw he was messing with his tires... I exited & U-turned and stopped behind his vehicle & trailer.
Come to find out the old man was trying to replace a flat but didn't know the bearings had failed either. He was using a pair of plyers to remove the lug nuts and had no jack. He had managed 4 off and still had 1 more to go... He was very upset and exhausted and worked in the area, actually he knew some of the operators I talk to a lot. I could tell he wasn't feeling good, I brought him back to my truck sat him down & gave him some water. I told him to wait & cool off while I tried to get the tire off.
I grabbed my 4way & jack (he didn't have one) and that's when I noticed after pulling the tire he had another issue, his wheel bearings had failed, inner seal blew out & it didn't look good. I walked back to my truck & told him the bad news. He had cooled off by now & I said your in luck because I happen to have a complete wheel bearing kit in my back seat. I pulled the old one off, put the new one on, fixed him up good as new & then put his spare tire on. He took down a list of the tools I used for future reference.
He offered me $100 and I declined and just took $40 for the cost of the new wheel bearing kit complete with new hub etc that I had bought at McClain the day before
So moral of the story. Stop & help someone out be a good samaritan for a day
