  • Looking for Some Blue Water Tackle Advice

I will be updating some of my offshore tackle this spring and wanted to know what you guys are using. I have some Penn Squidders and a few Penn 4.0 reels. My main objective is to do troll for king, dorado, amberjack and bottom fish for Snapper and Shark. With the size of my boat the really blue water fish are out of my reach so I dont need Marlin like equipment.

I want to get some quality equipment but will only go offshore a half a dozen times so I dont want to break the bank on gear. Good value is the theme.

    Any equipement advice is welcomed.

Avet is the way to go. We have a few SXs, LXs, 30s and 50s and I love them. The SX is not much bigger than a golf ball, but we have them spooled with over 400 yds. Avets are tanks and definitely worth the money.

hey guys thanks you have me started on the right direction. Have any of you picked up the TLDs or Avets at the Cut Rate close out sales. What is the used market like?

I bought the Saltist 40H (H= high speed) & put them on some of those Trevalla jigging rods. I also have a Torsa 30 which is a great reel!

IMO the TLD is a good reel but old technology ... but they are still selling them.

AVET makes a solid reel for sure .... just get the right one - and they do put these on sale - Call Don Savage with Savage rods about the blemish reels he gets from AVET, he is a dealer for them. - 832.971.3050

Coe emntioned two reels you need to consider ... the Salist by Diawa is a good reel with a high speed of almost 7:1
The high speed reels are great for trolling inside the 60 mile range as kings and mahi are a great match, and when you dropping for snapper it comes up faster. Shimano makes a Torium that is comparable i nhte 20 or 30 series that would fit the mold as well.

BUT - AJ's are a different story, they don't call them Reef donkeys for no reason .... you need some strength to pull them in

                I suggest a 30 2-speed reel for thase guys, and a a big bait

I agree with Coe and Muddskipper totally. If I were to go with anything besides Avet, I'd go Diawa. I've personally seen Saltists dominate tuna, snapper, big sharks and just about everything they hook into. I use a Diawa Saltist spinning reel for my tuna popping set up and am very happy with it so far.

I would definately go with a 2 speed for grouper, big snaps and AJ's. A 20 class 2 speed is all you need with braided lines. If you are going to fish mono then a 30 class is probably a better choice. I've had both and the 20's are much less cumbersome.
