Been busy since I got back from vacation, and just realized I had not put up the report. No pictures because I didn't want to bring my phone and stuff out on the ice, and forgot to do it at Crenshaw.
We went skiing last week up by Salt Lake. The original plan was to fish the river, but we were by a lake and I happend to drive by and see about 100 people out there fishing. On Saturday(1/15) I wandered down there to see if anyone was catching anything so I could plan my Monday trip. I am sure glad I did. Most of the people seemed to be walking all the way across the lake to the far side, but there were a few people close. I started talking to them and asking questions. They had a couple rainbows using a powerbait/worm combo on a trebel hook just off the bottom. Another guy was using a small jig head with a chunk of worm threaded on the hook. Luckily while I was there a game warden came by and checked their stuff. One of the guys then told him he was using two rods but he had both licenses for them. Apparently in Utah if you want to fish with two rods you need to have two licenses. Good thing I found this out or it could have been ugly. I for sure would have used two rods. Sunday it warmed up and Monday got up to the 40's, so all the snow on top of the ice had melted and was standing water. That is why I decided not to bring my phone out there. I decided to go the small jig head approach but I double rigged it like I do my flounder rig on the same line with no swivel so they don't tangle. I got down there at 7 and started getting bites right away. Could not seem to figure out the bite and I was starting to get frustrated. I was wondering if it was small crap and that is why everyone kept walking past me to go to the far side of the lake. Then I luck out and get one. It went about 14" so I strung it. Bunch more bites and no more takers. Finally some guys came by and asked how I was doing. I explained what was happening and they told me not to wait for it to take it. Once you see the little tap pick up the rod gently and once you feel the next tap just hook the mother. That was the ticket. I ended up catching 6 solid rainbows. Some people walked past me leaving from the other side of the lake and each had one or two, so I was feeling very proud of myself.
