Greetings and salutations. I've made it down to Galveston once a year (over Labor Day) for the last 5 years. The first year I came with my family and was only able to steal a couple of hours to sneak into the surf and throw some dead shrimp under a popping cork. I've fished freshwater all my life in the lakes around Dallas, and taken a dozen or so deep sea trips, but I had never just waded out up to my chest and gone mano a mano with the fish. A couple of google searches told me the shrimp was a solid bet so I gave it a try. I didn't realize it at the time, but it happened to be one of those green to the beach fantastic days to be fishing. I either caught something, or lost my bait to a fierce tug on almost every cast. And the variety of things I caught: ray, small shark, smacks, whiting, hardheads and gafftops, specks, and ladyfish kind of blew my mind. I knew I had to come back when I could dedicate more time to fishing. So now, we have turned the family trip into a buddy trip and half a dozen or so of us come down every Labor Day to see what we can hook into. We usually find a beachfront house on the west end so we can just stumbple out the back door and into the water. Last 2 years, a hurricane has been in the picture for at least part of the trip, so we're hoping for better luck this year. Thanks in advance for all the info and good fishing.

Days like you describe are not rare to this area! I would suggest you and your buddys hire a local fishing guide, and do some bay fishing! there are quite a few who advertise on this site, and for the cost they will turn your Labor Day into an event that you will not soon forget!Remember that tipping is allowed!!!LOL!West Bay Sensai...
