  • Unemployment Benefits?

A million and a half people are losing emergency unemployment benefits the first. These are people who have exhausted their 26 week state benefits and used up to 44 weeks, I believe, of emergency federal unemployment. I don't think this is the group that had 99 weeks of unemployment. The president wants to extend that aid.

What do you think should happen, and why?

I read yesterday that all military personnel are limited to the initial 26 weeks. true? still need to verify this but if 26 weeks is good for the people fighting for the country it should be good enough for the citizens. Isn't that long enough to find a new job? Just my 2 cents - I've never been on unemployment.

I think we should just let those folks sink or swim? Seriously, I agree with the proposed 3 month extension and our do nothing congress come up with a jobs bill the president can sign. Call me what you will but the last thing we need right now is more poverty in the richest nation on earth. My mind at Christmas was often consumed with the notion of little children with not one present from Santa. Hell yeah, I'm a tree hugging bleeding heart and Jesus loves me, this I know.

I filed for unemployment one time when I was 22. I found a job before the first check arrived. I can't imagine not being able to find some kind of work in that amount of time if you hustle and really look. They have been gifted half a year of pay by their neighbors and are griping that isn't enough? Time for a reality check is my opinion.

That is 110% correct. And the cord would be cut if not for the fact you are " buying " 1.55mm votes.

I've been on the unemployment line 3 times. Got laid off, but found my own jobs. Unemployment workers are a joke. I'm in the wrong business. It came over the radio last month that welfare people made $3000 a month. I'd stayed home if I got that kind of money. They are like little birds waiting for someone to feed them. If they are disable, no problem. If they are lazy, then cut them off. Not judging people, but as long as our famous money hungry politicians give them everything, they are not going to work. They will just tax you more. Our so call leaders who make the laws and rules are bringing down our country. Bet a third grader can do better. Enough said. Lord Bless.

We can not afford to continue to pay millions for not working. Now it's "just three more months", and then what; a permanent paid unemployed class of millions? They'll keep voting to get the money and delusional, well-meaning people like Harvey will continue to vote the same way.......until the country grinds to a halt.

I think they should all get minimum wage jobs so they'll qualify for food stamps .

unemployment comp. is average of 300.00 per week. Based on 40 hours, that's 8 bucks an hour. Just about minimum wage. I would like to think that most of the unemployed would rather have a job, but that's probably delusional. Whatever happened to wishing the best for folks, especially the least among us. BTW, Bruce food stamps are on the way out too. I often wonder how folks make out on minimum wage. Pay rent, utilities, child care while they're at work, car insurance and gas (if they has a car). Something has to happen otherwise when folks get hungry enough the crime rates going to triple. But i guess that's why we all have guns, and so will they.

How many of those poor people have cell phones, xboxes, internet and cable tv? Is poor really poor anymore?

I've worked 3 part time jobs at minimum wage all at once to feed me, pay my rent and keep the lights on. I was able to do that without having a cell phone, home phone, pay tv, or game console. I never considered that I was owed any better. You work hard, you get noticed for hard work and opportunity finds you.

Sitting on your duff playing the woe is me card for days, weeks, months or years on end gets you no where fast. Did I like working my *** off for pennies? Hell no, and that memory is what still drives me.

I saw a sign at Bucees today saying they will pay you 10-12 bucks an hour to work there. That's not bank but it's something.

And so what about people making making minimum wage. What's that saying about why would someone with minimal education, minimal skills and minimal desire and work ethic expect to make more than a minimum wage?

That would be true if they were working for the money. But they aren't. All they have to do is turn in one application a week. I'll be generous and say that takes an hour. So, we're are paying them $300 an hour to find a job.

That's lawyer wages and when job hunting they don't have to hire an office full of people to support them on that pay rate like a lawyer does.
