It finally happened! Launched from my parent's bay house in West Bay and headed towards where I usually gig for flounder. With an incoming tide, the area was littered with bait and hungry fish. My dad and I tide the yaks together and set up for some drifts and picked up a few dinks. When the wind died down, I separated and headed to the grass line that had some nervous bait. The water was slightly tainted. Seeing a swirl, I tossed my TTF Flush in morning glory parallel to the grass and twitched it in. A few twitches later...*pop*...down goes my flush. The fish bursts towards me and goes under my yak. I deftly used my rudder and turned my yak and go with the fish. At this time, I haven't even felt the weight of the fish and suspect a trout. After I turn around and set the rudder again, the fish starts pulling me and I suddenly feel it's full weight. It rips a lot of drag and starts going towards the open bay. I fight it for about 6 minutes without even seeing it and then I saw the golden flash. With all this fight, it had to be a red. A few more pulls, I bring it closer. Then from the depths comes the fish-a large speck. I bring it in and net it. I unhook her and get my phone out to take a few pictures before releasing it. That's when tragedy struck. The trout starts thrashing around and on it's last thrash, she struck her head onto the side and lay still. I put my phone away and put the fish back into the water...praying that she would come back. I spent 20 minutes trying everything and hoping that the fish would swim off. She didn't. I really didn't want my first large trout to be like this...My dad though had a ball though. I taught him how to catch fish with artificials and he caught two trout, including a nice 20 incher. I ended up with 4 or 5. The large trout ended up being 27 inches.
