Weather was awesome this weekend except the freaking wind! Tried to go offshore with Mark and Lara Saturday...got about twelve miles behind a shrimper and a rig. Saw one ling come up to say hello to he boat and that was it! Nothing at all happening. We were getting beat up pretty bad so we decided to take it in.
Stopped off at the pass on the gulf side. Water coming out REAL strong so we set anchor and threw out the lines looking for bull reds. Mark hooked an outstanding 27" red you see in the pic. That was it for us. Though the conditions looked right, couldn't find the fish. We bumped around a couple more spots but that was our whole day. The bonus is that Mark is on a diet so that red met MY grill that night!
Lara and I went out Sunday afternoon. I wanted to catch that outgoing tide again in a few different places figuring it would have to produce fish somewhere. Started out in Halls. Lara was throwing live shrimp under popping cork and I was on bottom. Found a couple small reds and a 16" sand trout. That was it there. Moved to a couple more spots I like around Karankawa and only wound up with a couple under 12" reds. Moved around to the mouth of Karankawa at the ship channel. Tide moving real strong here around 5:30. Threw into the current and let it run with the tide. Once the bait would hit the ship channel it would get picked up by a red. We must have caught fifteen reds out of that hole in an hour and a half. Also caught a bunch of throwback fish, a couple small specs, and Lara's hung a big stingray. She fishes with light gear so those reds and that ray give her the fight of her life. We boxed 4 reds and six sandies and threw everything else back. Camera batteries were DEAD on BOTH cameras so no picks of this trip. Always seems to work like that for me...the day I don't have the camera we get on em. Go figure.
I noticed a post on here about rude boating. I know whenever I pass by someone fishing a mouth of a cut I need to go through, I will always slow down and putter by so as to disturb the fishing as little as possible. I just think that is the right way to do things. We had three boats pass by us with two of them doing just that it. Always wave a thank you. We did have one boat that came through both times (in and out) at full throttle. Yes we are fishing the pass but could you come off the throttle a little? That to me is simply making a decision to be a d bag instead of taking some time to be polite to others who share the water with you. My wife, does not know boating manners, even looked over at me and said "shouldn't they slow down?" Some people are just simply rude.
Anyway, not letting that get in the way of a great weekend and some great catching on Sunday.
