  • Galveston Redfish Series

Albert & I fished the GRS today. We had grand plans, but they didn't pan out quite the way we expected.
We started out at the redfish honey hole and caught a few trout, but not a single redfish. Moved to spot 2 and Nada. Moved to spot 3 and finally connected with 2 solid reds and 1 small red. Went to spot 4 and found Nada. Spot 5 produced lots of bites and a few solid fish but no upgrades from what we already had except for the big girl that I broke off that would have easily put us on the leaderboard. I had just retied and had a new leader on, so not sure what happened.
We started making the run in and about halfway albert said "we should check those fish in the livewell" so we stopped and found that the plug had popped out. It was dry as a bone because the plug had popped out and the big girl was DEAD. That was a half pound penalty.
Barely made it to the weigh in and weren't even close to the top 10. We ended up with 10.88 lbs and the winner had 16.15.
It was a beautiful day out there, but the bite was really tough. A lot of people didn't weigh in fish today and lots of people ran all the way up to Sabine to find fish.

Thanks for the report, guys. Great catch. Those two reds look like they made up the 10.88. Better luck next time. Sometimes it takes only a few ounces and you're there...

Nice job Chip and Albert. Me and Dpop fished hard all day until 3:45. We couldn't catch a keeper, though we did catch about 25 or so reds. I killed a consolation flounder for dinner though, just to make me feel better. I had family in town, otherwise would have been there at the weigh in just to check up on everyone.

I had to come home and ice my wrist from casting so hard all day.... that and soak my throat with alcohol to alleviate the pain of not catching them....

This was posted on Capt. Steve Hillman's web page.........Today was the first of four tournaments in the Galveston Redfish Series. You could fish anywhere from Sabine to Matagorda for your two biggest redfish.

Jake and I decided to stay close to home since I've been on some pretty good schools here. We had 3 schools to choose from and we decided that we would fish the most secluded one since it was a Saturday, the weather was awesome and there were a couple of other tournaments going on. I didn't want to run the risk of heavy boat traffic hurting our chances.

We started fishing around 7:30 and Jake hooked up with a 26.5 inch red on topwater within the first 10 minutes. I soon followed with 2 lower slot redfish on Bass Assassins. The reds really weren't quite showing themselves just yet, but they were obviously there. Within a couple of hours the schools started coming to the surface and we began the culling process. We saw a lot more than we caught as there was just not much tide and it was hard to make them eat. After culling through 11 or 12 reds it was time to head to the weigh-in.

Our two biggest reds were 26.5 and 25 inches for a total weight of 11.95 pounds. That placed us around 11th or 12th place out of 53 teams. Congratulations to Randy Weaver and Dean Stevens with their 1st place stringer of two redfish weighing 16 plus pounds. This tournament is a live weigh-in and most of the reds were released successfully. Jake and I didn't win, but we had a blast catching all those redfish. I can't wait for the next tourney which will be held on August 28, 2010. Final results will be posted by late next week at http://www.specktourney.com/ja/index.shtml.
