  • Karankawa lake with 007

007 and I left out of Fat boys this mornin at 0:645 headed for the marsh.
The tide was commin up on mean low and the ramp was just jumpin with fisher wanna bee's.. There were Kenners, aqua sports, flat bottums, and All sorts of deep runnin boats sittin at the dock making for a hard launch... I even had to ask a dude in a deep draft boat if Mikey could step in his boat to get to mine...
I waisted no time gettin the flock out of there... Reefs a showing. skinny water for sure.. I turned right... yes I put the hammer down right at a the ramp and headed straight into the shallowest part of Jones lake..
The rooster tail was about 25 feet and the 21 ft. Flatscat jumped out of the mud like a female mud wrestler in heat...
I think i had her trimmed to the max and we were sporting 6000 rpm in nothing flat. Mikey was standing on his tippie toes and I said if ya can't see it don't wory about it.. If I see land I turn, If I see water I give it the gas..As we jetted across the lake the chill from the 40 deg. temps turned my glasses to iceburgs.
Since hurricane Ike, the bottom has changed a bit and I could only hope Pats pass was still passable.. Scootin along drafting only about 3 ta 4 inches at 45 mph was superb..
I made the hard left and scooted between the markers into the intracoastal and let the hammer fall.
Karankawa bound we were, for some sight casting for reds and mabey a trout if they were there..
Icicles formed on my glasses as we spead along the intercoastal. The water was like glass without a chop or wripple anywhere..
As we screamed past Greens, I noticed it was full of boats and was glad we were going the distance to my favorite redfish hole...
I eased back on the throttle when I saw the small channel that leads into the lake and took a hard right.. Slip, slide, sideways, scoot and we were into the cut.. I hammered it again and was headed for the first 90 deg. left.. I started my turn 20 yards before the corner and she slid like she was on ice into a perfect holeshot out of the turn and was on our way to the lake..
Right about then the cannon blasts of duck hunters started resonating from the distance and we knew that the lake was empty..
We set up our first drift in my favorite corner and I noticed that there was grass floating on the surface along with bubbles.. I knew that there were not gunna be any fish here with al the surface trash so I put the hammer down again a headed to a more secluded part of the lake..
Thats where we started seeing the action and I geared up for a sneek attack.. There was a school of about 20 reds just tearin up the southern most shoreline and I made a beeline just ahead of them to set up the trap..
We were throwing tops and they wern't wanting to play with us.. Mikey would land his pink skitter right in the sweet spot and they would just scatter... So I tied on a old Brown Flapper in Strawberry and whipcream and sent her flying.. Whammo,,,, Fish on and the fight started.. after a few seconds I knew that this might be a smallie and landed a 18" red..
Fish off the hook and back at em I went.. Mikey was chunkin the skitter still and had a nice one 6" behind his lure with his head out of the water and his mouth open, but they just wern't playing tops... I re-aligned the boat and we got into position once again... Tosss,,, twitch,,, whammo..
Red on again .. this time it was a winner and the fight was on.. Mikey coaxes one finally to take the top and it was a double hookup.. I tugged, he pulled, we grunted, they fought and 007's let go... I had mine hooked good and landed a nice 22 incher for the cooler..

Back up, regroup, let them settle a bit and then lets get on em.. Mikey was still wanting to catch his first red on tops so he kept it tied on, I knew that the only way to get some fish on board was to tease them with the softies..
We spied the herd again about 40 yards up the shoreline and the had already regrouped into the pod again.. I set us up for the ambush again..
Here they come bro.. toss, toss, kerplash, kerspalsh.. our lures were on em again... I was hooked up within a micro second with a whopper and mikey was workin his top again. He had a few slow blows and nothing that was a real commitment and I was strugglin with a large and incharge mad a helll red.. I fought him for a bit and when he got close to the boat he went on his victory run and spit the hook.. Bastage... I reelled back in a set her flying again.. Whammo another one was hungry for the bait and it was on again.. This one was hooked good and I landed a nice halfshell tidbit in the 22 inch range again...
Bye this time they got wise to us and it was over, they scattered and we were left there with nothing to toss at..

Kenny called and said he was at confederate and I said lets ride.. I put the hammer down and did the snakey curves without incedent and saw Karankawa cut.. There were seagulls standing in the water and it looked about 2" deep... Jack plate up, trim up, hammer down..We screamed thru the cut at about 6000 rpm and I swear the birds were only knee deep..

Took the long haul across the bay to meet Kenny and say hey...
Kenny trolled over in his baby Cat and Mikey snagged a 16 " Flounder right in front of em...

Great day on the water again.. hope ya enjoyed the tale...

Here is a pic of a couple of the fish, The ones that are left, the neighbours are already circlin the waggons since the boat is home now...
