After working ridiculous hours for the last few weeks and knowing I had to come in on Sunday/Monday at 12am to facilitate user testing with France, I decided if I didn't take off on Friday to go fishing I would have to hurt someone.
I headed that way Friday at 5:30ish. I got to Edgebrook and realized I left the anchor in the garage. Doublebacked and got back to Edgebrook around 6:15 (man 45 minutes of fishing lost).
Got in the water at sunrise - 20-25mph winds, but this time the weight was distributed for better tracking and lowering my motor mount 3 inches made a huge difference.
Okay now onto the fishing:
Going down the main channel in "Gangs" bayou I saw what seemed to be trout hitting the top. Got to my spot and caught two trout in 5 minutes. They were 15 and 17 inches - kept one. I decided to move on as I figured they would all be schoolies and trout don't have that much fight anyway.
Moved up a cut and caught one small flounder right at 14 inches and one decent size flounder (didn't measure it knew it was big enough to eat) - kept one. Caught a rat red right at 18 and then lost something big -felt like a red - hadn't gotten new line yet....darn it.
Landed two more small keeper flounder - both released.
Later I had two more big ones break my line - now 5 fish in the last week have gulp chartruese swim minnows hanging from their mouth - I hope those jig heads aren't stainless
Saturday 10/23
Winds - nonexistent
Water clarity - good
Current - nonexistent
Was very excited for Saturday expecting the second day after the front to be really good with great weather.
Weather was great but I didn't get a single hit all day - couldn't find anywhere with current moving through it or consistent bait activity. On the other hand since this was the first time where the conditions weren't crazy I was able to explore more out in the bay in the canoe.
Lessons learned:
- Need to be ethical and make sure if I leave something in a fishes mouth it won't hinder it for long.
- I need to figure out a B plan for no current days.
- Cleaning two fish is more of a pain in the butt than cleaning 10 - Next time I am in a school of trout I will pull out a few more keepers to remedy this
- Not all line is created equal - yeah I learned this last week but need to put into practice - knowing is only have the battle.
