Well fellas its that time of year where the ol Corndog has more time on his hands than he knows what to do with. Two weeks vacation!!!! I loVe this time of year fishing and hUnting at its best.
I started off the festive holiday fishing with Sneaky down in Gorda on Saturday. First pic is of Sneakys 6.5lb trout! It was taken arond noon. Took pics and was released to fight another day. Second is a 24" pig I caught on a corky. This one went aerial when hooked and it would have been an awesome video had we caught it on tape. She put on the best tail walk I have ever seen. She went into the coooler as she would not have survived the release. Had two more 21-22" at the same location which is the third picture. All caught on corkys.
The weather was awesome and the fishing was tough but we pulled together a decent run at the end of the day. Sneaky broke off a 26" plus fish right when I was ready to net it. She will be around for another lucky angler one day. I lost a really nice fish on a blow up. Thats the way it goes.
Sunday rolled around and it was time to hit the water again. Picked my newphew up around 8am and headed off to the 2004 ramp to see if I could get my window knocked out. Ended up disappointed when I retnured that it was still there. Decided to avoid all the wake boarders and speed boats in CB and headed to the bay to our secret spot.My nephew was really itching to catch a Redfish,So I loaded the bait bucket with mullet from the bait hole. I cant disclose the location of the coveted bait hole as to keep all the potlickers out of my spot. Five minutes after setting up.We had a screamer pull some serious drag but my newphew was not able to set the hook. After thirty minutes same senario and this time he had the fish he has been waiting to catch. It was a redfish full of piss and vinegar and he had his hands full. Third pictre is of him grinning like a jackass chewing on a piece of barb wire.
I really enjoyed watching hiim catch his first keeper Red. I took him to shoot his first deer also and those moments are priceless. He is 13 YO and during the trip he launched the boat, drove the boat and loaded the boat. I am tryiing to teach him by hands on. So all of you out there that think a kid cant handle your boat you are probably wrong. Just be patient with them and let them make a few mistakes without freaking out on them. That dent they may put in your boat is worth it. Especially when you see the confidence they gain after a few trips. Also when I am at the ramp I see other fisherman watching him and I know they have respect for him out there handling the boat.
Saw Explorer21 and his wife out there. Nice to see some West end anglers on the water when most are laid up in the fart sack. Way to go Donna showing Explorer how to fish. Just kidding. I do regret I was not able to return to Gorda with Sneaky. I would not be surprised to see a post of a big fish since I know we were on em and it was just a matter of time.
So tomorrow will be day three and I will see what happens. I dont know when or where I am going but I am sure something will happen. Anyone with free time give me a shout. If you need me I will be on the water until I decide to head back to the deer lease. I will end this post with one of my favorite quotes!!!
