  • The Ethanol LIE. Why have we let our govt. do this to us?

Just did a bit of an experiment. I filled up with good old (sarcasm) E-10 87 octane at Buccees on Wednesday night. Drove into New Orleans and made it to my parent's house on fumes. 377 miles on the dot.

Found a station in N.O. that proudly proclaimed "NO ALCOHOL IN OUR FUEL!" Filled up there with 87 octane, ran around town a bit, then drove back to Texas. A total of 389 miles. I STILL HAVE OVER 1/8 of a tank left after driving to school and back today!

Now y'all, I'm pretty bad at math, but with about 3 gallons left in my tank now and having traveled 12 more miles, I reckon that E-10 gives me 17 mpg and pure gasoline gave me 20.5 MPG.

Someone do the math for me and figure out how many percentage points E-10 is less efficient than pure gasoline.

As near as I can tell, this is a huge difference. The ethanol in our gas might as well be dissolved AIR.

You had a tail wind, or you were heading into the wind...or you ate too much before leaving, or Fat Albert had a full litter box on the way there...too many variables. Drive there again and see if you get the same results!

There are many studies showing a 1.5% to 4% drop in mileage from regular gasoline to E10,but they say it burns cleaner. One study show that almost doubles the greenhouse gases to produce E10 as it saves on energy. There are a few vehicles that show an increase in mileage on E10,but not much of an increase.
      Today is a new day!!

Coach was the E 85 cheaper?I always fill up the rental car with e85 since it is usally cheaper. Having said all that it is still subsidized and raises the price of everything made with corn. Silly tree huggers!!

Can't put E-85 in my truck. Not only that, but I wouldn't think of it anyway.

I had more weight in the truck coming back to Texas. Ice chest full of mama's food, my fatter arse, and you have to know, like me, that Albert didn't lose any weight.

Didn't know you could still buy it without it in there. I've tested emissions at quite a few facilities that load gasoline trucks and they always splash mixed ethanol before adding gas to the tank trailers.

There are 2 stations in my town that carry ethanol free gas. The price is about 13 cents higher than the E-10. All the pumps have a sign on them stating no ethanol in our gas and the marquee says so too. These are reputable stations that have been there for longer than me.

Thats pretty cool! Wish they offered it here -- even if it were just at the marinas.

I heard that if they go to 20 % ethanol it would damage all marine motors and other types of motors..... 15 % , may be a problem as well . It's all bogus govment jacking us around .

This is in New Orleans y'all, Harahan to be specific. I thought I made that clear that I filled up in N.O. As far as I know you can't get anything but E-10 anywhere around here in Texas. Corndog, I used to bring back up to 50 gallons of the good stuff from home for use in the Mudda. It was a pain, but I never had a fuel related issue, and I believe it was because of that, and my use of Sta-Bil.

Shoot Sandy, I could have told you that. Looking at it from a pure chemistry standpoint, there is a crap-ton more energy in those long hydrocarbon chains than some puny half-oxidized 2-carbon alcohol.

About that headwind joke though. I drive up to Austin pretty regularly and it's amazing how much worse the mileage is If I am fighting a strong N. wind (cold front) on the drive up. The way I look at it, its like you have the same drag as if you were driving 20mph faster, and at higher speeds, drag increases a lot more (I think to the second power or something).

Show this to your students, you might learn 'em something for once

Al "BS" Gore even said Ethanol was crapola and he pushed the bill so he could get Farmers' votes. GD POS Dummycrats. It is proven Ethanol is a poor substitute and also causes more pollution because poorer miles per gallon-Green Idiots prevail again and end up creating/causing more pollution, more inflation, higher prices-hope California freaking goes "Bye Bye" into the Pacific. Thanks Al "GD Idiot" Gore and the Dummycrats-rot in heck pleeeze!
