Bubble float w/ flies

I ran across this while reading about Plugger, Rudy Grigar. Coastal fisherman, years ago would use water filled bubble floats to be able to cast flys with non-fly tackle/rods.

After reading the sight guide article by Shallowist (really excellent article!) I was reminded about this method and thought I'd ask ya'll about having any experience with it.

I've fished the bubble with flies under the lights with good success.
