  • Fishing with Corkys

I've heard a lot about Corkys, but I've never fished with one. I even picked one up last time I went lure shopping. How do I use it? Is it a suspending lure or a sinker?

Which Corky? The original corky, sinks about a foot a second or so. Take it to a swimming pool, throw and count how long it takes to sink, bump it, jerk it, see how it moves.

Easiest way to explain it is to work it like a topwater, except under the surface. Depending on the depth you may want to let it sink for a few seconds so you are actually working it where the fish are. Yeah sometimes you can work it right under the surface and the fish will grab it, but if that's the case you might as well be throwing a topwater. I think for the most part in the colder months a slow retrieve near the bottom works best.

I think it's an original Corky, but I'm not absolutely positive. I'll check back at the store. I don't think they'll let me chunk it into the pool at my in-law's condo, but I could put it into my hot tub!
I'm just learning how to use tops, so I think it will be a great addition. I've mainly been using soft plastics on jig heads and bouncing them off the bottom. I'd love to learn a more artful presentation.
What kind of fish go after Corkys? A friend of mine uses them on Flounder. Will Reds go after them?

Any predator that would eat a mullet will eat a Corky. They are incredibly effective on lethargic winter fish, but will work in all manner of situations. Probably the best advice, to start with is don't over work the lure. It's a finesse bait.

Boy , are you going to get all kind of advice ....... all of which has been good . The swimming pool is REALLY good, in fact for all your lures. It's not exactly the same as salt water and no moving water , but , you sure get a good idea of how they move in the water..... you'll be surprised by what you thought was going on and what really happens . I fish with corkys year round .....fast when it's warm , slow when it's cold . I 've caught trout , reds , and flounder with them .

If someone twisted your arm and told you that you had to pick just one all-around Corky, which would it be?

                          Great Question, Hinze!!

Plugger, I think that's the one I've got. I'll fling it into the hot tub this weekend and try it out and see if I can get it to work.
