Good luck with that gar. What are you going to do with him after you catch him? I know that if its cooked just right it will be good eating!

Gar Recipe (works for carp also):

take backstrap meat only. Set oven to 375, take a 3' x 3' sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil, rub with butter, take fillet and place in center of foil, place horse droppings all around outside of fillet, fold foil tight and place in oven for 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove from oven, throw gar in trash and eat the horse chit-it'll taste better than the gar!!

It tastes just like fishy chicken. Some like to make balls after boiling the meat but that's sissy Deep South cookin' like carp balls.

Fry them up with some Louisiana seasoning. Down here in South Texas it's called "Gatan" is considered quite a delicacy, better than Gater tail.

Give him at least 60 seconds, if not double that to get the bait deep enough for you to get the hook back into tissue soft enough to bury the hook securely. We use to use big minnow/shad and sight cast them. Drag it right across their snout. When he takes it just free spool and wait. We also would use bacon strips, believe it or not, it wiggles alot in the water and they would jump on it. They are really cool animals, we never killed them just caught them.

saw a guy years ago at toledo bend fishing at night with heavy boat rod with big penn reel on it from the bank .i just had to ask and he told me he was after big gar . i inquired about bait and he said he was using chicken fat and skin in the middle of a frayed piece of nylon rope , no hooks .told me the strands of nylon get caught in the teeth and they can't spit it out . did not see this bait but the guy swore he was not pulling my leg .said he had been catching big gar that way for years .anyone else ever here such? now my $.02 is in the mix .can barely stand to wait to read comments .good luck .
