  • Alive and well on Anegada After Category 4 Earl

Many heartfelt thanks to the people that responded to my "Hurricane Warning" thread.

As a dear friend on the island told me yesterday morning, "That was no ordinary blow job."

Earl roared in as a category 3, but by the time the eye passed 20 miles north of us, he was a category 4. We had 140+ mph winds here. Being 6 and a half feet above sea level, it was intense. Earl was the worst storm since Hurricane Donna in 1960.

We had many waves break over the crest of the beach, but not a single one made it to the house.

I have always said that if Anegada has a hurricane, I want to be here. I got way more than I asked for.

We just (miraculously) got internet back. No power yet. Running water restored around noon today. It is very still and hot right now - no fans. Hoping for power by sometime Friday.

We luckily had minimal damage - a couple of pieces of gutter blown away. The south side (Setting Point area) got the worst of the storm.

Four boats blew ashore. Only 4 because there were only 5 at anchor, and one of them held.

All but one of the docks on the island were destroyed. The remaining dock is the government dock, only usable by very large boats because it is very high, has very rough walls, and is in deep rough water. That means that there is no p[lace for a visiting boat other than the ferry to dock.

    This is typical.

I have posted some pics at http://www.bvipirate.com/Earl - more to come.

No fishing now - helping everyone else with repairs.

No surge on a relatively small island. Think about it. A straw sticking out of the ocean will not get a rise in sea level - too small - water just flows around. A large leeward land mass WILL get a surge - no where for the windblown water to go.

We are more like a straw than a large land mass. The tide was maybe a foot above normal. The seas were huge, but we have big reef out there and a quarter of a mile of shallow water between us and the outer reef.

Man, I was on pins and needles there for a while. Thankfully I got word via your BVI forum that y'all were ok. As we all know here, as storm is tough in the first place, but the aftermath can be most stressful to deal with. Prayers and blessings to the people of Anegada.

Great to hear that the damage was minimal, for you!! Riding out a storm like that is always interesting to say the least. Hopefully you won't see another storm for a very long time.
