Crabbing Locations

One of my fondest childhood memories was going crabbing with my grandparents. As an adult, I primarily fish, but the few times that I have gone crabbing, I haven't had much success. As a kid I remember it being easy to fill a five gallon bucket full of crabs. I'm not sure if this is attributed to over fishing by commercial crabbers or am I simply not hitting the right spots. If anyone has a location that they would like to share, I would appreciate it. I want to share the experience with my kids.

According to the Galveston County Daily News the crabs in the surf should be turning on in the near future. Remember to leave the ones with the orange spongy on the bottom as this is their eggs.

I dunno why, but when we were kids all you needed was a dock and some fish heads or chicken necks, some string, a basket, and a long net pole. The place really didn't matter, long as you keep chumming them in. We had blue crabs galore, LOL. I don't know if the weird weather, the commercial crabbers, the red and black drum, or the pollution has got 'em or not, but I agree there are far fewer.

it could be that in this sunny hot weather, the crabs are burying into the sandy & mud, like the shrimp. Maybe try some night fishing? Sometimes bluecrabs will actually swim at night, which is way cool. Some green lights, dock lights, and flashlights are very fun - don't forget the mosquito spray.

I hope the kiddos get to have some crabbin' fun!

You sure you ain't talking about the Golden Crab, also called the Gulf Swimmer Crab, or Surf Crab? I've seen a bunch swimming offshore on the surface but the not the blue crab - but I'm down south by Mexico.

I never ate no Golden Crab before. The female bluecrab has red points on the tips of its shell and the claws, and the male has blue claws - easy to ID.
