Launched at the north end of GISP by the RVs. Started the day playing around the grass mounds throwing top dog jrs, gulp shrimp and swimming mullet, spoons, sand eels, etc...
Nada but a couple hardheads.
Decided to throw the cast net and caught a lil piggy.
Went just past breakwaters over 6-8ft water. On the first cast the first cast the cork goes down immediately. I lose a trout at the boat - barely 15" - Piggy is fine.
Throw out again and immediately the cork goes down - 22" trout released - didn't bring a stringer or second cooler.
See some shad and throw the cast net and catch 6
Throw one out and goes under immediately. Pole buckles - need to loosen drag - ohh....too late - line breaks.
Retied - throw it out - immediately goes under - nice trout on the boat. Screw this my cokes can share some space with some fish.
Throw out again - almost immediately goes under again - another nice trout in the boat.
Throw out again - another monster trout immediately - bites through line - time to put on a leader.
Retied..again - throw out - wipe the sweat from my face (it was freaking hot and I forgot my hat) - bam goes under and I am too late.
Throw out again - miss another one.
Damn no more shad. Throw a few things...nada.
Throw on one of those holographic plastic finger minnows. Make a few casts. Throw it back towards the breakwater and bam... I got a big fish on. Big trout jumps out of the water. Land him - time to take the cokes out of the cooler..no more room.
Nothing after that...time to find some more shad.
Troll around looking for a school..there it is. Cast catch about a dozen..back to the spot.
Miss a couple - bite slows down. Move spots a little closer to the big breakwater - fish are feeding bait over the breakwater.
Throw right up to the breakwater and bam...nice red.
Couple more casts - another red, but this one 19.5"
Then I see something flapping on another breakwater a ways off. Keep seeing it flap. Troll over to see what is going on. A seagull is chilling....his leg is tangled in some fabricy cover to the breakwater.
After 15 minutes of trying to explain to him I was trying to help, I got him free and put him in the canoe. I would have kept fishing but it was a good idea for me to leave I hadn't eaten, drank water, and forgot my hat.
So yes I saved a seagull - a laughing gull actually (learn something new everyday).
Tally - killed 4 fish, saved one bird.
