We have a young friend from Saba (an island about 90 miles southeast of here). John is only 18, but he is one of my best friends, and I think of him as a man, not a boy. John got here on Monday, and we have done some fishing a couple of days.
John caught a nice snapper here at our cottage on Wednesday night.

So - today, I picked John up a little after noon and we headed back to our cottage. Along the way, we stopped by the spot where I have been catching the tarpon. The bait ball was in, the tarpon were feeding, and it was time to fish.
We bolted to the cottage to get rods and get back into the sea.
John was first up - he cast into the bait ball and landed a gar.

I put the camera away and got out my fly rod. Almost immediately I hooked up with a really nice tarpon.

I am using 20 pound tippet, and I had the tarpon right on the sand when he made the move that finally wore my tippet in two. The piece that I pulled back felt like it had been dragged down a gravel road. Lesson: use the 80# shock tippet that is in the closet.
John hooked into a nice one.

I am very happy to say that John played his well and landed the fish.

The fish swam away happily on the release.

We celebrated the afternoon's fishing with shark tacos tonight.
