Vibrio........ Be careful

my understanding is bleach is best.

sometimes you need to asume a bit of responsibility for your healthcare. some docs just don't pick up on these unusual bacteria so you need to give them a little bit of help. tell them you fish and are around marine life.
2 bugs we have to worry about are vibrio and a mycobacterium marinum.
mycobacterium is very rare and takes awhile to culture so it's really hard to identify. folks w/ aquariums are at risk for that one too. it presents w/ swelling and doesn't look anything like vibrio.

My neighbor caught it earlier this year netting menhaden in the canal for offshore bait-luckily his wife's a nurse and they noticed redness and immediately went to doctor and got antibiotics to treat it.

Doesn't vibrio attack the immune system, so generally you need to already be at least a little sick or have a weak immune system? Don't think that should make anyone any less careful/prepared, but don't there have to be a number of things all coming together to affect people like this guy?

I'm no doc and I think the person that told me this is not a doc either, so could be completely off base.

Some of you remeber from our ABWF days LARS husband got it. They are relatives of mine.

He went to Angleton Danbury Hospital and the same thing happened to him, miss-diagnosed for 5 days, and they were about to amputate the whole arm. They got him out of there to a Houston Hospital.
He was able to get well but not befor losing his trigger finger .... we now call him Hi-4 ...... and he throws a great curve ball.

Couple of things you need to know
Vibrio can infect you two ways ..... blood stream, and ingested
There are other things that can infect you out there as well, but vibrio get all the attention and is mistakenly refered to the flesh eating diease ..... but there are other things out there that will eat your flesh, and they reside in fresh water lakes.

Vibrio is the big reason we don't eat oysters in the summer, you can catch vibrio and it makes you real sick .....and why you see warnings when eating raw oysters

Vibrio mainly found on the gulf coast, and occurs from May - October.

Generally it effects those with weakends immune systems, heavy drinkers, and those with diabetes. The heavy drinkers have a weak Liver .... seriously.

You never see kids with it, because their strong immune system ..... just think how many times we had cuts when we were younger and got in all kinds of nasty water ...

I short, becareful, it has been in the water around us beofre our time, and this is nothing new ...... just be mindful if an infection breacks out and seek medical attention and explain to them you think it could be vibrio

My friends dad died from it last year...was all over the new. My brothers friend bought some live crabs from kemah and got pinched and lost his arm. A friend of my fiance was in the hospitall for about 3 months. I keep peroxide and clean everything . People laugh but I aint dumb

Thanks for the news Greg, and a good reminder to keep soap(Hibicleanse is the best), bleach water solution or peroxide handy and any infection should be considered a Vibrio infection. If the doctor doesnt think so...find another doctor fast!!!

I dunno, you can get bacteria such as vibrio through your nose, ears, or the smallest scape when you shave. Same for encephalitis in freshwater. I don't worry about it too much - in fact I go in the surf to clean my cuts sometimes. If I worried about all the bad things that could happen, I wouldn't get to do anything fun. But I agree, those back-bays are thick with vibrio in the summer, which is why I don't wade fish 'em.
