Need to put a new #2 battery in my Whaler, the deep cycle one that I run livewell,GPS, radio, etc.when I'm anchored at the jettys all day with a cold one...

Thinking of upgrading to an AGM battery...kind of expensive but rated for 800-1000 cycles, no maintenance, and less finicky about charging than gel cell batteries. Anybody have any experience/reccomendations for this type of battery. Thanks in advance. OR19.

Just replace your wet-cell Deep cycle every two years ...and save your money

Buy Interstate Deep cycles, and fill them up with water every other month

I have an AGM battery-I think it's worth the price since those cheepazz Walmart batteries never last beyond a year. That AGM holds a charge well. For offshore, Gel or AGM are recommended since they take a beating better than a regular lead battery.

I agree with Muddskipper, you can buy alot of batteries for what you pay for a AGM. I have one from Eagle (Alvin, Tx) and one Interstate in my boat. They both are nearly two years old and so far are working flawlessly. Also,I have to admit that I have a battery maintainer installed in my battery compartment. I love this thing because it only charges when the battery needs charging and cuts off when fully charged. You can get one of these from Academy or Bass Pro for about $99.00 for a two battery unit. Most all of them are saltwater resistant.

I don't have to take any chances anymore with guessing if my batteries are going to fail me. When I plug it in, it tells me the condition of my batteries. So far it is working great.
Also, many boats with multiple batteries don't have a kaster battery switch. I also think this is very important in aintaining the life of your batteries. When my boat is parked, I switch the batteries to off.

          Good luck...

I agree with Robollo. I've run AGM's for soem time, cars, boats and motorcycle. The reasons I run them in my boat.
              1)They charge faster
2)The retain a charge longer between charges
              3) AGM's can take more stress before messing up the internals, ie.. jarring around
4)Did I mention charging faster? That means when you run from one location to another in your boat you just gave it a bigger charger than a wet cell would have accepted.

I agree they cost more but if you want the best you have to pay for the best. If you are ok with almost then by all means any battery will do.

I'm pretty demanding on my batteries and I've never had to swim back due to a dead battery

Thanks for the input guys..I think I'm going with the AGM, I've been buying a battery almost every year and I have to disconnect and remove them to add water....big pain n the a** on my boat. If they last 5+ years like they say then I break even and had to do no maintenance...don't go offshore very often but I do occaisionally. Manufacture recommends a minimum of 800 CCA for my motor, those run around 70-80 with tax so 3 of those equals 1 AGM....

Does anyone know anywhere you can buy them in the Houston/League City area? or do you have to order?
