How bad do yall think the oil spill will effect the fishing in galveston? Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

So far the spill has affected about 5 percent of the US Gulf waters mainly between the Mississippi Delta and the Florida Panhandle. The area around St. Bernard's Bay and the Chandeleurs are getting moderate amounts of oil sheen, mousse (pancake goo), and asphalt chips. Currently there is no effect on Texas, nor is heavy oil likely here unless a hurricane pushes it our way. If it does come our way, it will likely be aged tar balls and asphalt chips - although that's difficult to predict and I remember the goo from Ixtoc back in 1979.

If anything, commercial seafood prices could go up a little, since Louisiana harvests so much product. There could be more fishing pressure in Texas as vacationing fishermen avoid the oiled or closed areas up by Louisiana and Mississippi. Several large fishing tourneys have been canceled over by Biloxi, such as for the ling run and offshore billfishing - and those boats are looking for action somewhere else.

The upshot: the Galveston area looks GREAT! The water is warming into the sweet zone and red snapper fishing opens on June 1.
