The guy that run the place gave me a dime for every one I killed. That and with a bow, had alot of fun shooting those d@mn things.

Bingo! We use to catch the big ones on big J hooks and slabs of bacon or chicken neck. If your talking a six footer, "We're gonna need a bigger boat, Captain" and hang on for the ride.

I caught one in chocolate on a rat-l-trap, my favorite redfish bait. appeared to be 5' to 5&1/2'.
must have hooked him (her) in the tongue, flew out of the water and tail walked just like a tarpon. I then realized (since I was by myself) how in the heck am I going to land this beast. we struggled for about 20 min, chasing him down with the trolling motor until the 25lb leader frayed. I was kinda grateful he broke me off, wasn't sure I could have reached down and removed that bait inside that toothy mouth...

Gar
Here is how you do it, been catching these things all my life.60" coated steel leader 18-24 inches long. Crimp a swivel to one end and crimp a #2 VMC treble hook to the other end. Use a 1/2 oz egg sinker above the swivel. For bait, hands down the best bait is live bait and that would be a mullet 6-8 inches long, hook it in the tail. When you see gar in the area throw this out and let it sit. Your fishing on the bottom, the only time I would use a cork is if they are in your light at night and you can sight cast to him.The best reel is one that has a clicker, Shimano Calcutta's, TLD15, Speedmaster are good are a Garcia 5500 or 7000. Which ever reel you use, after you cast out put the reel in freespool with the clicker on. If the feel pressure they will drop the bait. Once the clicker goes off let them run. They will run and stop, run and stop. Once you can't stand any longer let them have it some more LOL. You'll know, they will make a strong run after playing around with it. Thats when you throw it gear and set the hook. You can gaff them in the lower jaw where there is soft skin. After landing it, cut the leader close to the mouth and let it go.Gater

When I was in H.S. and College ( about 3 years ago), we used to take frayed line and hooks baited w/ perch and fish for them in the Sabine River out of Kilgore, Tx...
When that failed 90% of the time. we'd sit w/ shotguns and rifles on the bank in July/August when the river was down and clear. When they'd come up and roll...away we'd go and unload. They are pre-historic looking.
We'd give them to the folks that lived in the area, along w/ the carp and buffalo we'd trap, unless the buffalo were big enough for us to fry on the banks.
