Preferred line-to-leader knot?

I use the 2 uni knots if I am tieing the leader directly to the line.

If I have a swivel between the line and the leader (20lb. mono) and am using braided line I tie a palomar knot for the braid and a sixteen-twenty knot for the leader.

I also use a sixteen-twenty knot to tie on jigs and lures. A magazine about 10-15 years ago tested all the knots for tieing on lures and the winner for strenth was the sixteen-twenty.

I'd thought about using heavier mono for strength, but shied away from it thinking the heavier line would diminish your bait's action. Got to get a fish on before worrying about break offs. Anyone ever experiment in a swimming pool with 20# verses 12# mono to see how it affects lure action ?

No but i have been fishing 20lb for 10 years and have caught a ton of fish. I have fewer brake offs than friends that throw 12-14. Both on fish and oyster.

I have had issues with fluorocarbon line because it is too stiff and slippery.

I only use 2-3 foot of leader if I have to, since I hate the knot being anywhere in casting range. I only use leaders when surf or offshore fishing.

For jetty mackerel sometimes I use steel, using the Haywire Twist.

Uni to Uni, never have had it fail
I use 10lb PowerPro (Equal to 2lb dia.) and a 12lb Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader (about 12'). Slides through the guides just fine, Ive never broke off after I switched to the Seaguar and have actually straightened hooks out with this set up

Most experienced bay fishermen use heavier mono not "leader material". I use seagaur 20#.
A lot of the time I tie straight to the braid, one less failure point.

A little side note, I went to JIM WEST'S seminar Saturday and he doesn't use a leader. Instead , he uses a heavier line , no particular brand by the way, like 14 lb.

yep i use 20lb cuz I dont like break offs.

Hands down the Uni! Have used it very succesfully for years with conventional gear and for building fly leaders. The albright is very good as mentioned for greater differential in line to leader, where the Uni may not work as well. Bimini twist or similar line doubling knot will work if you need to transition from light line to much heavier leader. If you are going to use a swivel, buy the highest quality, smallest swivel that tests to the strength that you need. Most fishing rod guides will only tolerate a swivel clanking through them so many times before they fail and the ring cracks or breaks loose from the guide frame.

Mono to braid the Uni seems too bulky going through the guides to me, so I use the Albright.

I do the Uni and Double Uni because I can tie them without my glasses, or even in near dark. I've had the Albright/Surgeons knots fly apart because I ain't no good at them.

Unless you fish for big fish like tarpon or toothy fish like Spanish macks, you don't need a leader. I just use 10 to 17# good quality mono "nekkid" all the way.

True, some like braid, since you can get a very thin line good to cast for the equivalent of 4-8# mono. That's pretty skinny stuff and you need a clear leader. A very small drop of super-glue or similar will lock the Uni knot together if you're worried.
