It's official, Spring has arrived! The winter pattern that held so stable since January has finally vanished, and Galveston Bay trout are now in a more spring like pattern. The concentrations of bait and fish are now spread out around the bay. Daytime temperatures have been holding steady in the 70's, with night time temps in the low 60's consistently for over two weeks now. Several coves have produced giants, with a sprinkling of exceptional catches coming from open shorelines and reefs as well. Many of the smalll baitfish have started making their spring time appearances, with small shad and finger mullet showing in several areas in abbundance.
The water has greened up in many areas and the heavy rainflows from winter are blending into the heavy influx of gulf water from strong easterly winds. With consistent water temperatures in the bay in the high 60's and low 70's, we are within days of seeing numerous areas blowing wide open with trout catches. The surf temps have been steady in the mid 70's and the water is just one calm day away from being absolutely perfect.
With all of the warm temperatures and baitfish on the move, the trout are back to eating topwaters on a regular basis. Corkies are still producing well, and plastics are accounting for the greatest numbers. This is a season that requires patience, and for those who have it, big rewards are never far away. Three patterns will hold this month, as summer patterns begin to materialize. Open water structures around the bay will produce the greatest numbers, shallow mud flats will hold scattered large trout, and select reefs with deep water close will see trout running bait to the shallow edges during feeding periods. With the extended winter season and colder than normal temperatures, out late spring pattern seems to be running slightly behind schedule, and the trout are still holding slightly deeper than normal for this time of the year.
The weekend will produce a handful of large strings and possibly bring several truly large trout to the scales. This Saturday, April the 17th, marks the final round of the Specktacular Trout Series. The points race is hotly contested by three teams that are separated by less than 2 pounds. Registration will be this Wednesday evening at Floyd's in webster, and the weigh in will be Saturday afternoon at Fishing Tackle Unlimited from 3-4 pm. Following the weigh in, the Team of the Year will be awarded. This event should be the biggest turn out of the year with the warmer weather and light winds forecast for Saturday. As always, I look forward to seeing all of the teams wish everyone good luck. For those who haven't made it to an event this year, this weigh in and awards ceremony should be fun!
See you there.
