  • Fish Cleaning Table...

    Hey Gang,

Next weekend I will be building a new fish cleaning station. Spot I am using is an outdoor kitchen where and old stove top oven used to be before it was Ike'd. Thinking of using just a large plastic cutting board sloped to the back with some holes drilled through for water. Thinking of installing a gutter underneath to carry the water out of the kitchen area. I am not on the water so I also want to have a hole in one side with a garbage can under that so that I can simply move the guts and remains to the can beneath to then remove and toss away. Having the hose hang down from the roof with a sprayer within easy range.

Have any of you built one? I need advice on what worked for you or what did not...something I should avoid while building...something you thought of after that you wish you would've done...etc.

I would also love to see any pics of your fish cleaning stations for ideas...

    Thanks all...

King Starboard for the table top, double bags for the trash can!! Tough to keep the stink away. Use a jug saw for the starboard, circular moves to fast and leaves burn marks. The distributor is in Houston so you can buy direct if you can't find it locally. Great product, that is very easy to work with and very durable.

That's either David or it's Jared from the Subway commercials!!!

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. My two cents - which ain't worth much these days - is to build a table about of marine plywood and I use treated wood for the legs and such. The plywood is about 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick, and yes you need to buy a 4x8 sheet that fairly expensive - but it will last a lifetime.

Now that star-board is some really expensive stuff, and I only get a small chunk of 2x3 or something like that. People like to steal that stuff so I take it with me if it's outside.

I don't build any chutes or holes in the plywood, neither. If you're by the water on a dock, I just throw the guts and bones overboard. Inland, what I do is use a milk jug with the top cut off, or something like that, and put the scraps in there and freeze it. That keeps the stink away until trash day!

Extra points for having a knife holder so you don't blast the knife off the table with the water hose.

                    Cleaning tables

Here are a few pictures of tables that I have built. The frame is MCQ treated pine and the top is Choice Deck composite decking. Over the years I have had tables made from cultured marble, pure marble, stainless steel, formica, and starboard. The issue I had with all these is that they get slick when cleaning fish and they are expensive. In the past treated lumber was treated with arsnic and was not a good choice for table tops. Now treated lumber is treated with copper which is better than arsnic but still not chemical free. After doing some experimenting and searching I found the choice deck to be the best solution for a table top. It has a rough texture, non porus, won't rot, and is non toxic. Gater

Nice table gater, the choice deck is a great idea. From the looks of your place you should just pay someone to clean your fish!

Nice work ! I built a new one in Sea Isle last year after Ike took my other.......and used 1/2" Star board for the top. You can cut it nicely with a circular saw without burn marks.............but you need to use a very fine tooth plywood blade. Good luck with your project ! I also used a plastic drop-in laundry sink ( easy to make the cut out )......a standard stainless steel sink will be rusted in no time down there.

i made mine out of cutting board plastic and some scrap 6"x6"treated wood for legs, used a 4" pvc pipe for the drain and that expensive decking material for the sides and back. (ike repair leftovers) i got a 4' square piece of cutting board 1" thick for about 75.00 @ www.lairdplastics.com
stuff cut like butta! the whole thing must weigh 200#

will send pics as soon as i get some

                              Thanks

Thanks Kenny and Bluewaver. I have built about ten of those at Tiki and one down in Sea Isle. The table is 6 ft long, the one I have at my house is 8 ft to handle bigger offshore fish. It was not bolted down but tied down and I lost it in Ike and the neighbor found it about 3 streets over a little beat up but ok.
Kenny those pictures are not from my house but for people here on Tiki. Actually the one with roof over it is at a spec house I built here on Tiki. We matched the house and it turned out pretty cool. Gater
