  • Serious Research: John Wayne House near SLP

I'm embarking on a serious research project regarding the "John Wayne House" near SLP. Before Ike, this was the "Yellow Cabins" resort on what we call John Wayne's Cut. Recently a group of investors has done a lot of work on site and they'll be open for business soon. I know some people are for this project and some against. That's not what this is about. I want to know the real history of this spot and its connection with "The Duke".

I've done a lot of historical research on different things in the area, but this is a new chapter. I'm looking for information, both factual and "hearsay". If I could get either from any of you, I'd sure appreciate it. I'll be heading to the Brazoria County Museum to see if they have anything on it. I've also tried contacting a writer for The Facts who did a story on it years ago. He hasn't replied in the last few months, so I figured I'd go to the interweb to see what the fishing public might know.

If you'd like to reply in public, please do so. If you'd rather do so directly, please PM me here. Thank you all in advance. I know there are a lot of us who'd love to find out what the real story is, and I'm ready to tell it if you can help me. Thank Y'all, Sandy

I’ve always heard people talk about it but nothing verifiable. I’ll be interested to hear where this takes you.

I'm unfamiliar with where this is. Can you post a pin on a map?

Thanks BU. I sometimes travel that way getting from Sugar Land to our bay house in JB. Never knew the history there.

I took a photo of this dog that was wandering around in that area, so it must be true. I think he was looking for Sandi's crab trap.

Didn’t it have about 4 small cabins on the canal I surmised to rent ? What are they planning to do there ?

They moved the small cabins over nearer to the big house. They've renovated the big house itself, keeping all the bones. It'll be a bar and grill. They also built another larger structure along the canal. The whole complex will be an RV park, etc.

OK, the tract came out of J. B. Cassidy's 2971.50 acres that he owned in July 1958. K.S. "Bud" Adams owned the tract next to the 111 +/- acre tract that is now Blue Water Resorts.
You can run title on the tracts from the Brazoria Co. Clerk Website (free, unless you wanna buy a copy).

J.B. Cassidy/Harry K. and Albert Smith are all from Harris County. JB Cassidy appears to be from a prominent Texas family with roots going back to the 1800s. He also owned quite a bit of 'undeveloped property' in Houston-like 215 acres between Stella Link/Bellaire Blvd. and Brays Bayou. You don't own 215 acres in the city and 2900+ acres around San Luis Pass w/o being well-heeled. Maybe that's where John Wayne name came from? However, the land he sold in 1958 did not note any improvements on it, so I doubt Cassidy had anything to do with it except sell it to Smith brothers. Maybe the Smith Bros. were associated with J.W.? Harry K. Smith was Chairman of the Board of Big Three Industries-very wealthy person. Died in 2002. Big Three Industries owned part of the land also-so that makes sense. My $$ says the Smith's were possibly associated with J.W.??? See http://02db39d.netsolhost.com/citize...story26hof.htm They sold Big Three for $1 billion in 1986 to air liquide, I believe he was also Smith Oil Tools (Bowen Oil Tools originally)/Smith Industries-not sure about that. If you run the Brazoria CAD records/history, maybe you'll see if the Smith's built the old house??? They owned the land for quite a while.

Dang Robalo...I figured you forgot how to run records since you quit going out to the field 30 years ago.

                        John Loftis would be proud.

It's like riding a bicycle (well, ok, a tricycle).

I like to call landmen that specialize in running title "Vault Monkeys"-it ticks them off, but most have no personality anyway and can't buy leases, so they excel at standing in a vault all day (well, maybe 4 hours-they can't miss afternoon talk shows/TV). Ha Ha.

Holy Moly, that's a wealth of information. What about Brown and Root? I've heard a lot about them in connection with the property. Still haven't made it to the museum to look up anything. I get off school early tomorrow and it's on the list.

I'd bet the Smith Bros. were buds of Geo. Brown. I dint see anything on B&R.
